Figure: Sensing of different nitro-containing explosive analytes by differentiallymodified nanosensing devices in a single array. Blue bars (Left) represent response from devices modified with a stronger electron-donating amine N-Methyl-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylamine). Red bars (right) represent response from devices modified with APTES. Bar values are an average of the signals obtained from 4-7 devices modified with APTES and 4-7 devices modified with N-Methyl-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylamine , respectively. STD values are ~10% of reported values.

Clearly, using different amine derivatives of different electron-donating characteristics it will be feasible to sen- se and simultaneously identify different explosive species, simulating a simple olfactory system. Note that the response to TNT is set as 100% and all other responses are normalized to that of TNT. © Angewandte Chemie / Wiley-VCH

“We are now creating a chip based on large arrays of nano- sensors chemically modified with a large number of chemi- cal receptors, with different binding capabilities, in order to detect a whole spectrum of explosive species in parallel.”

Fernando Patolsky, University of Tel Aviv
