recorded growth of 8.4% compared to 2008 to reach 308GW in 2009. The share of solar power was close to 8% or 24GW in the total installed renewable power generation capacity.

Solar photovoltaics (PV) technologies Solar photovoltaics (also called direct solar technologies or solar cells), maintain the largest volume of installed technologies among all the solar power generation technologies globally. The most prominent type of direct solar technology is the crystalline-based solar PV which constitutes 85% of the total solar PV market share.

Solar cells convert the energy of sunlight into electricity through the photovoltaic effect by using a semiconductor, usually crystalline silicon.

Solar cells can be primarily classified based on the type of semiconductors used such as Crystalline silicon, Amorphous silicon and Cadmium-Telluride among other. The two most prominent types of solar cell are crystalline solar cell and thin-films.

The concentrated PV system is the latest innovation in the solar power industry and among novel PV technologies, the most promising solar PV technology in development is quantum dots PV cell which claims to harvest light energy in the infrared and ultraviolet spectra which creates possibilities to generate electricity at night.

In 2008, global solar PV production recorded a robust growth rate of 84% from 4GW in 2007 to 7.3GW, with China as the largest solar PV producer
