BAKERS’ groups over the weekend said that prices of branded bread are ex- pected to rise again this month because of higher prices of raw materials. The prices of the branded bread will be increased by the middle of Decem- ber because of rising costs of sugar, short- ening and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), according to the bakers’ groups.

Last month, the groups raised prices

by P1 to P1.50 a loaf and P0.50 a 10- piece pack of pan de sal, citing higher flour prices. The government last week said that sugar prices would increase to P64 a kilo from P50 a kilo levels a month ago. Also, LPG prices would rise by as much as P55 a 11-kilogram tank in the next two weeks because of soaring glo- bal prices.

Prices of shortening have risen by

between 20 percent and 25 percent, Walter Co, Philippine Baking Indus- try Group (PhilBaking) president, said. Amid these price increases, the cheaper bread loaf variant “Pinoy Tasty” is selling briskly, the bakers’ groups said. Pinoy Tasty now comprises a tenth of bread sales in the country.
