RetroTech THE Sinclair ZX81 was a much-improved follow up to the $200 ZX80
model, originally released in 1980. The kit version was $99 while the assembled one was at $150. All models ran a 3.25MHz NEC Z- 80A processor but the ZX81 had a better BASIC programming language and had fewer chips to assemble and a simpler design. It was also cheaper to produce, hence the price.

Nation (Asean) marketing strategy by introducing the company’s latest line of televisions here at the island city-state on November 29.
The new products target mainly
Asean economies, which Toshiba said positions the region at the centre of its multinational enter- prise drive for growth of its global TV business.
With that in mind, Toshiba made Singapore the headquarters for its Asian TV business in April 2010, to address customer requirements in the region, channeling major re- sources in developing optimum business strategy and products for its Southeast Asian neighbors. One of the more interesting mod- els presented at the launch at the Suntec International Convention Center, attended by a good number of journalists from the region, was

INGAPORE: Japanese technology giant Toshiba reinforced its Association of Southeast Asian
Growing LCD TV market In a press statement, Toshiba said
that the global LCD TV market is growing briskly and company esti- mates show 2009’s global market of 142 million units climbing to 200 million units in 2012, an average annual growth rate of 26 percent. With 10 million units sold for
the Toshiba Power TV Series. One of the LED-backlit LCD TVs in this se- ries includes the Toshiba Power TV PC 1, which features a back-up Lithium-ion battery that would last up to two hours.
“This is a very useful innovation particularly in areas where power supply can be uncertain,” said Ronald So, department manager, Asian Headquarters Division, Toshiba Singapore Pte. Ltd. Also presented to regional mem- bers of media was a preview of the REGZA GL1, which according to Toshiba, is the world’s first “glasses- less” 3D TV. Two models will be first available by early 2011: the 20-inch 20GL1 and the 12-inch 12GL1.
FY2009 that ended in March, Toshiba aims to boost sales figure significantly in 2010, and position- ing much of this growth in the Asean economies being the corner- stone of its strategy.
Sale of more than 1.2 million TV units for Asean market in FY2011 translates into a 20-percent market share, Toshiba said.
The latest models The new LCD TV models that were
announced include the flagship TV 55ZL800, the 3D LED TV REGZA WL700 and two other Power TV models, namely: PC 1 and PB 1. The 55-inch 55ZL800 is a high-end model for the home entertainment market and features Toshiba’s newly developed CEVO Engine, a high-per- formance multiprocessor platform that according to Toshiba delivers
breathtaking image quality, sharp, re- alistic 3D, and excellent sound. While the WL700 series of slim LED TVs, which will be available in 46- and 55-inch models, will com- bine superb performance with a head-turning appearance. Its mini- malist design was created in collabo- ration between Toshiba’s in-house design team and Jacob Jensen De- sign, one of Europes leading design studios in high-end electronics. The two other Power TV models, aside from the earlier PC 1, include the PS 1 series of LED TVs, offering 24-, 32- and 40-inch models, all de-

Internet addresses used up by January
THE reserve of available Internet ad- dresses will be used up around the world in January, warned experts based here.
Internet addresses are distributed
by the Internet Corporation for As- signed Names and Numbers, which provides them to five regional or- ganizations around the world. “The pool of central addresses will be used up in January,” said Ernesto Majo, communications di- rector for the Registry of Internet addresses for Latin America and the Caribbean, a Montevideo-based nonprofit organization.
“This week four blocks of Internet addresses have been used up,” Majo told Agence France-Presse Friday. “We are left with only five, and it has been decided that they will be distributed to each of the regional Internet registries.”
But Majo said the situation was “not serious” because a new Internet protocol will allow the production of billions more Internet addresses. The currently used Internet Pro-
tocol version 4 (IPv4) manages about four billion addresses and has reached its limit, experts said. But an alternative protocol— IPv6—will allow to register and service billions new addresses.

Viacom wants new ruling against YouTube
US entertainment giant Viacom asked an appeals court to overturn a judge’s June decision to toss out its billion-dollar copyright lawsuit against YouTube. Viacom attorneys argued in a filing that Judge Louis Stanton of US District Court was wrong to rule that YouTube was protected by provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA).
Google general counsel Kent Walker
declared Stanton’s ruling “an important victory not just for us, but also for the billions of people around the world who use the Web to communicate and share experiences with each other.” But in its appeal, Viacom con- tended that Stanton should have
declared it the winner in the suit because Google had the right and ability to curb “rampant” posting of copyrighted videos and benefited from not doing so. The US movie and television giant sued Google and YouTube for a billion dollars in March 2007, arguing that they condoned pirated video clips on the website to boost its popularity. The lawsuit was merged with a similar complaint being pursued by the English Premier League, which said football clips were routinely posted on YouTube without authorization. YouTube took shelter in DCMA
wording that protects websites from being responsible for copyrighted material that visitors post as long as
the material is removed when owners point out violations. Viacom argued in its appeal that the
DCMA protection was for “innocent” Internet firms and vanishes “the moment the service provider loses its innocence.” Viacom’s suit charged that YouTube was a willing accomplice to “massive copyright infringement” and sought more than a billion dollars in damages. Viacom’s film and television
empire includes many youth- oriented networks like MTV and VH1 along with the Paramount and DreamWorks movie studios. YouTube was a year-old Internet
sensation when Google bought it in a $1.65-billion stock deal in 2006.
AFP CABLES LINK CHINA TO GOOGLE HACK
US diplomats in Beijing linked Chi- na’s top propagandist to the cyber attacks that prompted Google to take down its search engine in China early this year, leaked diplo- matic cables show.
That cable and others pointed to Li Changchun, the Politburo member in charge of propaganda, as the overseer of the cyber attacks that Google has charged pen- etrated its systems and those of 20 other US companies. According to the cables cited by
the Times, the attacks were coordi- nated out of the State Council In- formation Office with the oversight
of Li and Zhou Yongkang, who is China’s top security official. A May 18, 2009 cable quoted a
well-placed source as saying that Li was taken aback when he Googled his own name in Chinese and found “re- sults critical of him,” the Times said. A cable dated early this year quoted a Chinese person with fam- ily connections to the elite as say- ing that Li had personally directed an attack on Google’s servers in the United States.
But the contact cited in that ca- ble told the Times in an interview that Li oversaw a campaign against Google operations in China but the
person did not know who directed the hacking attack.
Google charges in January that it had been the victim of a highly sophisticated cyber attack in mid December, apparently to access email accounts of Chinese human rights activists, set off a huge bat- tle with Beijing.
In March, Google began redirect- ing queries from
Google.cn to
Google.com.hk, allowing uncensored Chinese search results. But it ended the automatic redirect to the Hong Kong site in June to avoid having its license suspended by China.
