Lakers rout Kings to

SUNDAY

IGER WOODS hasn’t spent much time atop the leaderboard in 2010, but the 14-time major champion was feeling right at home there on Friday at the World Challenge tournament.

Woods carded a six-under par 66 without a bogey on Friday to stretch his lead to four strokes over US Open champion Graeme McDowell. The former world No. 1’s total of 13-under 131 is six shots better than his best 36-hole total on the US PGA Tour this season—137 at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Woods hasn’t won a tournament since the 2009 Australian Masters and this unofficial 18-player event, which Woods hosts for the benefit of his charitable foundation, is the US su- perstar’s last chance to snag a victory in 2010, a year that started amid scan- dal and saw his struggles on the course mirror his personal travails. Until this week, Woods’ only ap- pearance atop a leaderboard this year was a share of first place after the first round of The Barclays. “It feels good,” Woods said of lead- ing for two straight days. “I’ve been here

Djokovic blitz brings Serbia level with France

snap 4-game losing skid

KOBE BRYANT scored 22 points and Spaniard Pau Gasol shrugged off a left hamstring strain to add 16 as the Los Angeles Lakers snapped a four-game losing streak Friday by routing Sacramento 113-80. The two-time defending NBA champions also had 16 points and 7 rebounds from Lamar Odom in ripping the Kings to halt their longest losing streak since the end of the 2006 to 2007 regular season, before Gasol joined the club. “We came out focused and

we played aggressive from the first minute,” Gasol said. “We kept our energy through- out the game, even in the fourth quarter.” The Lakers, who have won eight consecutive games over Sacramento, seized an 18-point lead in the first half and pulled the margin to 32 before Bryant and Gasol went to the bench for good late in the third quarter. Bryant shot 9-of-18 from the field while Gasol was 6- of-8 despite an injury that comes as his minutes have increased with injuries to fellow big men Andrew Bynum and Theo Ratliff. Gasol played a season-low 27 minutes against the Kings. Jason Thompson scored 19 points and grabbed 10 re- bounds to lead the Kings, who lost their sixth game in a row and 12th in their past 13 starts. Tyreke Evans added 15 points and Pooh Jeter had 12 for Sacramento. Every Laker in the lineup

scored, with Shannon Brown coming off the bench for 11 points and Steve Blake adding 11.

WORLD No. 3 Novak Djokovic fired a blistering 62 winners to defeat Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-1, 7-5 on Fri- day and pull Serbia level at 1-1 af- ter the opening day of the Davis Cup final against France. Djokovic clinched his sixth sin- gles win in six outings this year in the tournament as Serbia, backed by a noisy, passionate crowd at the Bel- grade Arena, kept their dream of a first Davis Cup title on track. Gael Monfils had earlier handed nine-time champions France a 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 7-6 (7/4), 6-0 vic- tory over Janko Tipsarevic. Djokovic was always in control against world No. 42 Simon, who had been handed the second French singles berth in the absence of in- jured Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and wrapped up the rubber after 2 hour 18 minutes on a fourth match point. Serbia’s top player, who could be called into doubles action on Sat- urday, praised the Belgrade crowd. “Definitely it’s an advantage for the home team playing in front of their people. To be able to have this support is really relevant,” said Djokovic.

“This competition depends on

crowd support. That’s why this competition is very unpredict- able and unique, especially at the later stages where you play top players. The crowd gives you ex- tra if you’re tired.” Monfils, the French No. 1 who is ranked 12th in the world, displayed none of the nerves he feared would emerge in the opening rubber of France’s campaign for a 10th crown. Despite a cold, the 24-year-old

Parisian instead displayed compo- sure in front of the largely partisan crowd as he sailed through the first set, handled a more determined charge from Tipsarevic in the second and dominated the third as his op- ponent crumbled.

Monfils admitted Tipsarevic’s shaky start, which included two double faults, helped settle his own nerves: “I got into the match straight away and that helped settle me,” he said. “I’m really happy with the result. Janko started off with two double faults, and straight away I saw that he was tense. That helped me to re- lax a little.”

Tipsarevic, who was Serbia’s hero in the semifinal defeat of the Czech Republic, was on occasion subject to jeers and whistles from some sec- tions of the crowd in the third set. “I feel the crowd was fair. They

were whistling sometimes in be- tween serves,” said Tipsarevic. “This is the Davis Cup final. It

wasn’t anything drastic or dramatic. I was feeling the pressure. But then again I was the underdog. Even though we were playing at home, everybody was expecting Gael to win, which eventually happened.” Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clem- ent will represent France in Satur- day’s doubles encounter when they are due to meet Nenad Zimonjic and Viktor Troicki while the reverse sin- gles will be on Sunday. However, Troicki could make way for Djokovic.

before, so it’s not a strange feeling. “It’s just one of those things where

tomorrow is the same game plan, just go out there and plot my way along and take care of the par-fives.” Woods kickstarted his round with an eagle at the 531-yard, par-five sec- ond hole, where he stuck his ap- proach from the edge of the fairway within 10 feet. In two days, Woods has played

the 10 par-fives at Sherwood Coun- try Club in 10-under.

“I didn’t hit the ball quite as sharp as I did yesterday, but I felt better with the putter,” Woods said. “I hit a lot of pure putts, made a bunch of five- and six-footers all day today.” McDowell carded a 69 for 135,

while Rory McIlroy, like McDowell from Northern Ireland, took double- bogey at the final hole and settled for a 70 that put him on 136, along- side England’s Luke Donald (66).

today,” McDowell said. “Played great yesterday, had it on a string, and today I wasn’t quite sure where it was going to go. But hung tough . . . to shoot three-under and not play my best, I’m pretty happy with that.” Woods, who started the day with a one-stroke lead over McIlroy and McDowell, followed up his early eagle with birdies at par-four fourth, the par-five fifth, the par-five 11th and the par-five 16th. “Because there’s five, and on top of that they’re all really reachable, I just felt that’s so important to play those holes well,” Woods said of the par-fives. At the par-three third, Woods was

unhappy with his drive, which found a mown swale left of the green. He elected to putt up to the green, then saved par with a three-footer. As on Thursday, he was pleased with his ability to recover from any poor shots, something he struggled to do earlier this season as he worked to solidify swing changes he was making with Canadian coach Sean Foley.

“I was able to piece it together and figure out how to hit better shots when I was struggling a little bit,” he said. “That was nice.” McIlroy played with Woods and

stayed close for much of the day. His hopes of applying real pressure faded, however, with a bogey at the par-five 16th, where his tee shot flew over the pin and landed behind the green. His chip left him 20 feet away. He came close on his birdie attempt, then his putt to save par from in- side three feet circled the cup but failed to drop. McIlroy got back to 10-under with a birdie at 17, but at 18 his approach was over the green and he ended up two-putting from 35 feet. Donald joined McIlroy on 136 with a round that featured eight bird- ies—including five straight from the 10th—and a double-bogey at 17. England’s Paul Casey recorded a hole-in-one at the 188-yard 12th, where he was able to see his seven- iron find the cup. American Bubba Watson, playing in the opening group after a first-round 76, holed his second shot at the par- five 16th for a rare double-eagle.
