PRICED TO MOVE IN A LATE-MARCH BID taking NAFTA to extreme lengths, Canada has made an offer to buy the town of Ely, Minnesota, and move it north of the 49th parallel, said the Ely Chamber of Commerce. The town is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilder-

ness, a 526,000-hectare web of lakes and rivers that connects to Minne- sota’s Voyageurs National Park and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. Tourism officials bought radio time for public announcements and

put up more than 400 lawn signs around town urging people to “Keep Ely in Minnesota” and “Say NO to Canada.” Officials said they were expecting competing bids from Nebraska,

Uzbekistan and a private group from the South Pacific. In a press release dated April 1st, they remained hopeful the bid would fail and that the attention might encourage more people to visit Ely. —I.M.

To protect your paddle from gunwale rub, you must whip it. Whip it good.

1] Tape the end of a roll of butcher cord to the shaft about eight inches above your bottom hand position.

2] Run the butcher cord down the shaft to the neck of the blade. Tape the cord in place and loop the cord back up the shaft to where you want the whipping to start.

3] Wind the cord around the shaft, over top of both original lengths of cord, and begin laying rounds back down toward the blade (photo 1). Make sure the rounds are fairly tight.

4] When you get to your bottom hand position, give yourself eight extra inches and cut the cord.

5] Pass the end through the loop at the throat of the blade.

6] Pull on the end closest to the butt so the loop slides under- neath the whipping (photo 2).

7] Trim any excess cord on the blade end and pull again so the cut end slips underneath. Trim the top end.

8] Wet the paddle, let the cord shrink in the sun and rub your gunwales with impunity.
