8. SAND, SAND EVERYWHERE… Head out with us from your lodge in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve to the dunes for walks and talks in the ominously named but beautiful Dead Vlei, whose apricot-colored dunes are dotted by small lakes; if you want to tackle it, you can climb the massive dune called Big Daddy to its nearly 1,000-foot summit. After a picnic lunch in the bush, there’s time to kick back at Kulala Desert Lodge – and have afternoon tea – before a game drive, a nature hike through Sesriem Canyon... and another sundowner! Meals BLD
9. ALONG THE SKELETON COAST An optional hot air balloon ride ($550 per person; see box on page 36) offers a bird’s-eye view of the dunes before your flight along the Skeleton Coast – known to Portuguese sailors as “the sands of hell” – to German-styled Swakopmund. Meals BD
10. OF SEALS, SEABIRDS… AND RHINOS Adventures by land and sea are yours at Walvis Bay. Climb aboard a 4x4 vehicle
for a trek past enormous salt pans to the appropriately named Pelican Point; and gently paddle a kayak on the calm waters of the bay, where seals come right up to you and show off! Then it’s on via air to Etosha Nat’l Park and the Ongava Reserve, a private wilderness reserve that’s home to the endangered black and white rhino – and to you – for two nights. Meals BD
11. LIONS AND RHINOS AND MORE The diversity of the wildlife in the Ongava Reserve is astonishing; game drives may reveal lions, cheetahs, gemsbok, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest and the protected rare black and white rhinoceros – as may a look just outside your brick-and-thatch chalet. One more African sunset and a farewell dinner under the stars... heaven! Meals BLD
12. HOMEWARD BOUND Tour ends: Johannesburg. After breakfast, fly to Windhoek and then fly to Johannesburg Int’l Airport (est. arrival time is 2:30 PM) for your return flight home. Allow 3 hours for check-in. Meals B
