Cashing in on spending cuts

THE coalition Government’s purse strings tightened almost to break- ing point on October 20th when the Chancellor of the Exchequer delivered the long awaited Com- prehensive Spending Review. THE comms channel is being urged to mobilise and help pro- tect its future in the face of new contract regulations and a rapidly changing network landscape. Comms Dealer is backing a channel initiative, launched joint- ly by Nine Telecom boss James Palmer and trade organisation the Federation of Communication Services (FCS), to persuade the British and European Governments to protect competition and recog- nise the independent UK reseller channel as a driving force behind economic recovery.

A key plank of the ‘Stronger

Together’ initiative is the recruit- ment of a ‘Channel Army’ to help the FCS lobby against proposed European Commission moves to enforce 24 month contracts for ‘telephony services’. The group is also planning to fight for better competition in the burgeoning fibre to the premises market which could ultimately see the end of Wholesale Line Rental as a margin rich reseller offer.

Palmer stated: “Openreach

had dropped its commitment to VoNGA (Voice Over Next Generation Access) but since the FCS Comms Provider event in October BT Wholesale is reviewing this decision and is in discussions with the FCS. This proves that we can exert an influence. We want channel people to wake up and understand where things are going and make sure we remain at the forefront of the changes.” FCS CEO Jacqui Brookes OBE commented: “We are the channel’s vehicle for change but we need more members behind us to make a real difference.” Campaign report – pages 42-43
