BRICK VENEER SIDING MANUFACTURER: BORAL BRICKS
B
ricks made from natural clay and shale have a natural advantage. They require less factory processing than materials such as cement, and thus have a far lower embodied energy. They also have excellent heat absorb-
ing properties, durability, termite resistance, and sound resistance. Their long- admired ability to absorb heat and cold slowly make them ideal for climates where temperatures tend toward the extremes. Boral is one of the big players in the brick industry, and they’ve wisely begun to promote brick exteriors for their green benefi ts. Because Boral has so many plants, you can typically fi nd Boral products that are produced within a 500-mile radius of the project site. Brick veneer construction, when done by an experienced mason, goes up quickly and requires minimal structural prepara- tion by the builder. Typically, a 1” air space between the brick and the sheathing allows for water drainage and mitigates heat transfer and
sound.

few years ago, I remember attending the International Builders Show and asking a couple of lighting control manufacturers about how their products help with energy conservation. They gave me a blank stare and pointed me to their newest “scene” controls. I guess I was ahead of the times. That’s not the case any more. Lutron is well aware that clients now expect their lighting
controls to save energy as well as off er snazzy options. And the advent of wireless technology has opened a whole new palette of possibilities. For example, the new Maestro system includes both an in-wall occupancy/vacancy dimmer and a switch. It’s also capable of controlling the company’s three-wire fl uorescent light dimmer. The inability to dim fl uorescent lamps has been a road block to acceptance of CFLs for years The full Maestro Wireless package includes wireless dimmers and switches that install easily and communicate with Lutron wireless controls, including handheld units.

LIGHT DIMMERS: THE ENERGY PAYBACK
This chart from Lutron demonstrates how the use of dimmers, by reducing watt demands of lighting, represents a far more efficient way to save energy than increasing energy generation. Read the full article here:
