SHOWCASING INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

Mr Moon shines in international arena

Skaramoosh | London

A London-based producer secured £1.4 million in overseas financial backing with the help of UK Trade & Investment to develop Mr Moon, a series for preschool children. Based on books by British author and illustrator Kate Veale, Mr Moon is a character who lights up the night sky so his friend Sunny can rest.

Skaramoosh initially joined UK Trade & Investment’s Passport to Export programme and attended key sector exhibitions in France and India with financial support from the Tradeshow Access Programme.

After securing an international award, the company joined UK Trade & Investment’s Gateway to Global Growth programme. Through this, managing director Daniel Slight traveled to Singapore, where he secured a local animation studio partner in the Mr Moon project through a £1.4 million investment from the Singapore Media Development Authority.

Having completed 52 parts of the first Mr Moon season, the next objective for Skaramoosh is to secure and produce a second season. But Slight is already looking further ahead.

“There are other markets we would like to explore,” he says, “and having had the experience of the knowledgeable, high-quality support available from UK Trade & Investment, helping us make and cultivate the right business contacts, we have the confidence to do so. It is mainly about setting up other partnerships for Mr Moon, but we are also looking to build relationships that will contribute to the development of other programmes. I have already recommended UK Trade & Investment support to other businesses.”

Pet plan Caldex | West Yorkshire

Pet-product supplier Caldex is growing its international reach after early success in France. The manufacturer of animal drinking bottles, feeding dishes, aquarium ornaments, grooming products, dog chews, toys and beds was purchased in 2007 by Chris Egan and Nigel Pullan, who commissioned an Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) report looking specifically at the country’s major pet retailers and wholesalers.

“We did some of this groundwork using trade data, petindustry journals and the internet,” explains Egan, “but UK Trade & Investment’s name adds authority. I believe that if enquiries come from the British Embassy, companies are likely to listen and respond. The OMIS report was extremely thorough. It listed specific contact details of people who would be interested in talking to us and even those we shouldn’t approach. The whole process was excellent value for money and saved us a lot of time.”

The report identified leads which helped contribute additional orders worth more than £50,000 in 2009. Caldex is considering further OMIS reports for a number of markets.
