Welcome to springboard
Welcome to the autumn issue of springboard. It is now five months since the general election and the new Coalition Government has already moved decisively to show that the UK is open for business. We want this country to be one of the best places in which companies can start to grow; where businesses of all sizes can thrive; where great ideas become profitable adventures and where we have a world-class workforce.
In a candid interview, Business Secretary Dr Vince Cable underlines how we remain a world leader in many sectors and sets out how the Government must link its priorities of dealing with the deficit and creating a growth economy. He emphasises the profound changes in the world economy with the shift of attention to the emerging economies of China and India, which, he says, present great trade and investment opportunities for the UK.
Our ability to develop strong lasting relationships with new and emerging markets is essential to building and helping to sustain prosperity and employment. The success of the Prime Minister’s delegation to India is a case in point. India is already a well-established investor into the UK and bilateral trade is worth £11.5 billion a year.
In spite of the recession, a record number of countries invested in the UK during 2009/10, with emerging economies strongly represented. China, for example, is now the sixth largest investor in the UK. You can read more about our inward investment successes on page 6.
Page 12 examines how the UK’s globally renowned creative industries are increasingly embracing low carbon and environmentally friendly business models, while the Intelligence feature on business psychology focuses on competition. It is my view that well managed and healthy competition can bring out the best in people; whether in sport or international business. The profound changes that are happening in the world’s economy mean tough new competition, but also new opportunities and rewards.
