Doodle Sti ck Literacy Programme Case Study 21st October 2009

John is in a low ability group for most subjects. He displays poor pencil control and he is also left handed. When writi ng, both myself and the teaching assistant have been able to help John by referring back to the way we used our Doodle Sti cks to form diff erent shapes, be they curved or straight. John was able to demonstrate by copying the shape in the air with his fi nger. John has also developed more confi dence and has begun to take part more in class discussions. John’s Classroom teacher Year 2

Here is a sample of John’s handwriti ng before the Doodle Sti ck sessions. The second sample shows his writi ng aft er just three half hour Doodle Sti ck Literacy sessions over a three week period.

Description: This is a creative and innovative literacy programme, ideal for the EYFS, KS1 and KS2. It would be great for children with special educational needs and reluctant writers. This fun, kinaesthetic, music and movement literacy programme is designed to stimulate brains to develop writing skills.

Score: 93.4%

What the testers said: “An excellent, fun and creative idea, introducing literacy and phonics into a PE lesson. It helps children who struggle with fine motor skills, such as writing, and promotes gross motor skills through physical activity. The lesson plans were clearly laid out and the DVD was very informative; this

made you feel confident in a new area of teaching. Children were instantly attracted to the brightly coloured ribbons. It helped encourage the children with English as their second language, or special needs children, to have fun, as there was no threat of being wrong.”

Description: Our fantastic NEW range of Maths Problem Solving Cards allow pupils to work autonomously or in groups, to solve problems relevant to their level of learning. They encourage the use of various methods and provide a great start, or end, of lessons activity, which pupils enjoy.

68 Practical Pre-School Awards 2010 Score: 93.0%

What the testers said: “A very useful product

for planned lessons or to dip into whenever you have a spare few minutes. Having the problems on cards was useful, as it meant more children could join in than if it was in a book. The children enjoyed the challenge and asked for them again. A good variety of topics to cover the maths curriculum, such as time and missing numbers.”

Description: A lively, original CD from Piccolomusic. A fantastic resource for families, schools and childminders, with “all-age-appeal”. Feel good songs for car journeys, rainy days or weekends, encouraging social confidence and a love of singing. We challenge anyone to resist singing along before the end of the CD.

Score: 91.7%

What the testers said: “Lovely, catchy, fun songs the whole way through the CD However it is quite

through the CD. However, it is quite

expensive, especially when compared to some children’s websites, where you can listen to songs for free. It helped young children to learn words, such as ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’, and these songs can be used to start and end the music session. Actions were easily followed and moving to the beat of the music encouraged exercise. The music and words of the songs stimulated and excited the children.”
