THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | SEPTEMBER 2010 DJ SCRATCHA DVA

Hey hows things..have you had a busy summer? Hey, yeh summers been great, Ive been playing at a couple festivals in Europe and I have got a lot of releas- es planned before this year is out

You have been playing your morning show on Rinse FM now for 5 years..how are the early mornings?! It’s not easy getting up at 5:45am, the snooze button becomes a next crud, but as soon as I get to the lane I get myself a double mac- chiato 3sugars, turn the mic on and woyyy!!...hulk ting

How did the show happen? It kinda just happened, because I used to do Monday and Friday 5-7pm. I started using the 4hrs a week to talk a lot, air some views and play new music. Then rinse asked me to do a full time brekkie show so I gave it a go and it worked out. I’m just happy people wake up to hear serious bassline and mc’in at such an early time There are not many stations where you can find something like that. I wish when I was younger I could hear all my fa- vorite underground tracks live in the morning.

How did you first get into mu- sic? I wanted to make music. That’s how it started. So I looked up some stu- dios and I got a couple of hook ups to go to some and tried orchestrat- ing these really rubbish tracks which at the time I thought were SICK! Making music will always be my main passion. The radio just came from me being a gassbag and want-

ing to share the music I found.

What are your thoughts on the UK funky scene at the mo- ment? I get asked this question all the time...... And a lot of people may say its dead But it’s alive from where I’m stand- ing. I’m djin more than I ever have in my whole life playing house an funky, I’m selling records and mp3s. I won’t lie to you I can see a few tombstones over there but I’m cool over here. The music is progressing and chang- ing all the time just the way I like it. The people who say its dead are still going to raves waiting to hear mi- graine skank.

What are your top funky tracks at the moment? 1 COOLY G - IS IT GONE? (DUB) 2 GUGU - AC RIDDIM (DVA MU- SIC) 3 MW MEGA - IN THE JUNGLE (DUB) 4 REDLIGHT - SOURCE 16 (DUB) 5 DVA FT FATIMA - JUST VYBE (HYPERDUB)

What new music do you think we should watch out for at the moment? Watch out for what Hyperdub Re- cords are doing..... Kode9’s a very serious guy. Also I’ve heard working progress on L Vis 1990’ss album and Cooly G’s and they are the most amazing pieces of audio I’ve heard in a long time. I’m excited for them.

You have produced alongside

East London’s Rinse Fm DJ ‘Scratcha DVA’ is a master in the artistry of grime, funk, bassline and electronic mischief. We caught up everyones favourite breakfast show host to catch up on jokes and his thoughts on the UK funky scene.

many artists such as Wiley, Cooly G, Roska and D-Malice is there anyone that you would like to work with? Other than the singers of Foreign Exchange, nothing excites me more than to think one day I will find an unknown and unheard talent I can put my energy and production skills into. Not even working with Beyonce, Alicia Keys or no one would give me more happiness than to blow an unheard of artist on my sound, not even Lady Gaga.

Your new tune “Just Vybe (Soule:Power Mix)” with UK

D DOUBLE E

We spoke with one of the gurus of grime and one half of the Newham Generals D Double E to talk about his upcoming EP Bag Of Grease and future releases.

You’re widely regarded as somewhat of a veteran of the Grime scene, how did this first come about? Well i was in the the garage scene at the time and i was lucky to be around when the garage to grime transition was being made so any one that was involved in the UK scene at that time got a chance to be the first DJ and mc’s. I happened to be one of the people that helped bring the sound to where it is now and I’m still big now, people grew up listening to me..so they show me re- spect in the game.

Your collective the Newham Generals are set to release the new E.P BAG OF GREASE on Dizzee Rascal’s label Dirtee Stank. Can you tell us a bit

about how this came togeth- er? Basically Skitz Beatz and long time friend of ours had produced a tune with Esko on the hook called IM A GENERAL( R.I.P Esko) He had just passed at the time so we thought that it was a good idea to show him support. The tuned caused a lot of heat so we decided to do another track called Like It Or Not- which is a big track! .. We decided to make an EP with five tracks on and called it Bag Of Grease. We also have a track called Bag Of Grease on there ft SKEPTA from Boy Better Know.

With such a hectic schedule are planning to keep up your slot on Rinse FM, and aside from this will we be hearing more from you in the next couple of

months? I don’t have much time for radio these days - since the release of the bad to the bone street fighter riddim its been crazy and its only gonna get more hectic at this rate, you will be definitely be hearing more from me in the next couple of months. We also have our releases Ne- wham Generals Bag of Grease Ep , D.Double.E Solo, Bluku Bluku EP and the 2nD Newham General al- bum is cooking up behind the scene as we talk, so I’m glad to say theres a lot to come.

artist Fatima is released on October 4th via Hyperdub, how was working with Fatima? There’s no way you can go into the studio with Fatima and not leave with something amazing. She’s just got that vibe about her. As a produc- er it’s good to work with good en- ergy and she has plenty of that. She is probably my favorite to work with, I shouldn’t say that but hey ho.

What inspires your music? Gyal, food and hi emotions.

If you could be invisible for the day what would you do?!

Oh gosh lol erm...I would probably go to Buckingham palace or wherever the queen lives and see if she really does wipe her own ass or not.

I hear your a big fan of twitter! Do you feel that new technol- ogy has had a impact on the music industry? Twitter is good for music because you can connect with people who you may not be able to on other so- cial networking sites. Twitter doesn’t have all your business up on there like pictures of fam and other private info. I think artists/celebs whoever are more likely to chat to you be-

cause it’s not so open and loose like say FaceBook or something. So for networking twitter has made things a lot easier.

Whats in store for the the fu- ture? I have something inside of me an I need to get it out that something will be put on my album, but I’m looking to go Egypt with my laptop and just vibe out for it. So watch this space.

You can catch DJ Scrat- cha Monday to Friday 8 to 11am on Rinse FM
