AfroCubism, the great world music album that-never-was, has finally been realised. In 1996, a group of Mali’s finest musicians were due to fly into Havana for a speculative collaboration with some of Cuba’s most brilliant singers and instrumentalists. For reasons that have never been made clear, the Malians never arrived. The project that became the Buena Vista Social Club was recorded instead. Now, 14 years on, World Circuit Records’ Nick Gold, has brought the original invitees together with a stellar line-up including Eliades Ochoa, Bassekou Kouyate, Djelimady Tounkara, Grupo Patria, Toumani Diabate, Kasse Mady Diabate and balafon player Lassana Diabate.

The Traditional Arts Team in the Midlands is calling on everyone with an interest in folk arts – song, music, dance or storytelling – in the region to complete a short online survey to tell them exactly who is doing what, where and how. The aim of the project is to map what is
already happening and make a case for future investment in folk arts in the region.

O’Neill’s have launched a new live music initiative to provide bands with the chance to become part of its national music roster, the O’Neill’s Playlist, from which its 62 O’Neill’s pub managers can select live music acts for their pubs. Interested bands can also be put forward for a series of regional showcases – scheduled for the autumn – with an ultimate prize of £2,000 of music equipment courtesy of leading UK music distributor Rosetti. Interested bands create a profile at
www.oneills.co.uk/ bandregistration where O’Neill’s managers from across the country can view details and, if interested, book bands for their pubs.
