Facing the fascinating 50+ facts: In the UK today, one in every three adults is over 50. By 2020 it will be one in every two.


In that period, numbers of over 50s will rise by 15% while numbers of under 50s will shrink by 10%.


But recent figures say that there are 389,000 over 50s out of work – compared with230,000 2 years ago


100 years ago there were 22 people working for evry one retired, by 2020 it will be 2:1 Women spend more on clothes as they get older, men spend less. By age 65, women spend twice as much on clothes as men. Over 50s spend £205 billion every year in the UK. Of this, over 65s spend £97 billion.


By 2050 there will be an estimated 1.6 billion people worldwide aged over 65. That’s higher than the total population of either China or India today.


In less than 35 years there will be more people over 60 than under 15 globally.


In fact developed nations got rich before they got old. Under developed nations got old before they got rich


According to a survey of 40 countries carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the UK’s approach to palliative care makes this the world’s best place to die – 18 places ahead of Switzerland.
