• The component provides a guide for the slide on structural tubing in a piece of equipment used to crush cars. The customer was losing a pric- ing war with a competitor and targeted the guide to cut costs.


• The cast part eliminated many of the fi nishing requirements of the weld- ment and is 600 lbs. lighter with no sacrifi ce in strength. The customer realized a $1,500 cost reduction.

• The casting provided a 34% cost savings over the steel weld- ment by eliminating the need to laser cut and weld together the steel pieces. Lead times were reduced from two to three months to two to four weeks.

Ecotec 2.4-L Cylinder Block Nemak, Monterrey, Mexico


Material: A319 T-7 aluminum. Process: Precision sand. Weight: 70.75 lbs. Dimensions: 19.7 x 18 x 9.1 in. Application: Engine cylinder block.


• Nemak produced the part for General Motors. The casting features strengthened main bearing bulkheads and cylinder bore walls, a refi ned oil distribution system and more than a dozen cast-in features that were produced in additional steps on the original lost foam part.
