AFS Technology Transfer CastExpo

Several new features were highlighted at CastExpo’10 held March 20-23, 2010 in Orlando, Florida, USA. CastExpo and the associated Metalcasting Congress represents the single larg- est event focused on metalcasting technology and research in North America. It featured an equipment and technology ex- hibition and more than 40 technical sessions on a wide variety of topics of interest to the metalcasting industry. New features included a technical education track orientated for the casting user and design engineering community focusing on cost-effec- tive casting design, sourcing concerns and the basics of metal- casting. Accompanying this emphasis on providing education to the casting buyer was the new Cast in North America exhibit, an exclusive area where U.S. metalcasters showcased their en- gineering and casting capabilities to their customers—casting buyers and designers. Another new feature, the Metalcasting Technology Theatre, provided practical technology presenta- tions and demonstrations for Expo attendees on the exhibition

floor. Several technical seminars were also available to show floor attendees in the Metalcasting Advancement Center. Plans are now underway for the 115th

and Congress Panels by October 15th .

be held in the AFS host city of Schaumburg, IL from April 5-8, 2011. Abstracts are due August 1st by Sept. 15th

Conferences—Webinars

AFS held a successful two-day hands-on workshop, Heat Treat- ing Principles and Practice for Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Cast- ings, that provided an understanding of the basic principles of thermal treatment for iron, steel and aluminum castings. The workshop was divided into two separate workshops for ferrous and non-ferrous. These workshops were designed for practic- ing iron, steel, aluminum and magnesium foundry personnel and are the only heat treat workshops dealing specifically with cast metals. Look for a future seminar in this Global Technol- ogy series for 2010 and 2011.

Website Development

AFS Information Services Library

AFS Technical and Marketing are working together to develop a new website dedicated to providing casting users, design engi- neers and purchasers relevant information on casting capabili- ties and properties. The website will make casting information easily accessible and retrievable from a single site by providing design guidelines, material properties for all metals, and metal- casting process recommendations. To try this site please visit: www.metalcastingvirtuallibrary.com/afscaps/caps.aspx

Technical Resource

Technical department staff and technical committees provide quarterly columns for MODERN CASTING and Metalcasting Design & Purchasing (formerly Engineered Casting Solutions). A new quarterly column is being developed that will document the best practices for various procedures and tests used in the metalcasting industry. Answers & Advice provides practical answers and recom- mendations to technical difficulties and questions asked by practic- ing foundry personnel to help the efficiency in their operations. AFS technical staff associates continue to support AFS members and casting users through telephone and email requests for techni- cal help, casting problems and metalcasting information.

The AFS library online database serves the needs of the met- alcasting industry for current and historic metalcasting infor- mation. A new project was initiated this year to electronically archive the full AFS Transactions series using non-destructive scanning technologies. The full project will be completed over several years and is co-funded through AMC research.

The updated and advanced AFS library website with almost 40,000 papers and articles about metalcasting are available for purchase. Located at www.afslibrary.com, the website houses the world’s largest collection of metalcasting reference material.

The new online AFS library is powered by a GoogleTM search

engine, providing state-of-the-art functionality to help users find articles quickly. A real time on-line help desk feature can assist users in refining their search or locating a specific article. The site then provides the option to purchase the AFS copy- righted papers and articles by automatic download or email.

For more information on the new library website, contact the AFS Information Resource Assistant, Katie Doherty, at 847/824-0181, ext. 294.
