The achievements of both companies and individuals across warehousing and 3PL were recognised at UKWA’s annual Awards for Warehousing 2010 ceremony, which was held recently at London’s Dorchester Hotel.


Roger Williams commented, “UKWA’s Awards are established as symbols of achievement in the 3PL sector and emphasise the importance of logistics within today’s economy. The high number and quality of the entries we received underlines the professionalism that runs through the modern logistics industry.” A total of nine awards were presented and the winners were: Best New UKWA Member Award: White Arrow Logistics

Briggs’ SpeedShield system is an intelligent asset management tool which


attracted a succession of major clients by demonstrating a strong ‘client centric culture’ which sees MDA’s entire business perform as an extension of it’s clients’ organisations.


Employee of the Year: Bob Steward, EDF Energy


As a result of performance management processes introduced by Bob Steward across EDF Energy’s warehouse facilities, the company’s logistics operation has become up to 30% more cost efficient. Warehouse Manager of the Year Award: Stephen Steenson, The Malcolm Group

Systems Training’s submission described a training project designed to reduce fuel consumption and accident rates among the fleet of a home delivery and collection specialist. The project has saved System Training’s client £2.2m in fuel costs and accident damage. Team of the Year: Wincanton Group

Augusta Westland Helicopters and provides a support service involving the receipt, inspection, storage, issue, design, packaging and export of both Ministry of Defence and Military Export helicopters. Customer Service Award: Bibby Distribution and MDA – joint winners


Bibby Distribution worked in partnership with Toyota to provide Toyota’s customers with an exceptional offering. The Same Day Service operation that Bibby helped to pioneer allows Toyota and Lexus service centres to order spare parts before noon and have them delivered by 3pm on the very same day.


Meanwhile MDA Ltd has successfully


Having joined the company as a clerk, Stephen Steenson was appointed manager of Malcolm’s Newhouse operation in 2009. Stephen has overall responsibility for all onsite activities at the Newhouse facility and since his appointment he has proved a strong leader while his hands on approach and first class communication skills have won him the respect of his staff and the senior management at Malcolm Logistics. Chairman’s Award: David Williams, Great Bear Distribution Having served TDG in a number of capacities, David Williams established Great Bear Distribution in 1994. Knapp acquires Dürkopp Fördertechnik


Warehouse automation supplier Knapp AGhas acquired the leading German overhead conveyor systems specialist, Dürkopp Fördertechnik GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dürkopp Adler AG. This strategic move enables Knapp to supply comprehensive warehouse automation solutions to clients in the fashion industry, optimising handling efficiency for both hanging garments and flat-pack items.


Commented David James, managing director of Knapp UK Ltd, “This is a very


exciting and welcome development for our company. The benefits to our customers are immediately obvious and we are already working together with our new colleagues at Dürkopp on a variety of opportunities.”


Knapp has already installed numerous systems for well-known customers in the fashion industry, including Bonita, QVC and John Lewis Partnership. With the acquisition of Dürkopp Fördertechnik, Knapp significantly expands its sales offer and service portfolio.


Jaycee distributes BAE


Jaycee has announced that it is to distribute BAE batteries in the UK. Impressed by the delivery, quality and first class support of BAE Batterien of Berlin, Jaycee and BAE will be exhibiting jointly at November's IMHX. BAE has developed an innovation whereby the individual poles have a brass inlay and are screwed to the lid and sealed with two O-rings. Knapp will take over all 160 members of staff at Dürkopp Fördertechnik, with product development and manufacturing continuing at the site in Bielefeld, Germany.


Dürkopp Fördertechnik has an excellent order book, which Knapp will fulfil in the coming months and years, to the usual high quality.


Knapp enjoyed a prosperous business year in 2009/10, with sales revenue of 204.6 million Euros and increased market share. The first few months of 2010/11


have already shown a pleasing order intake and, prior to the take-over, the group’s management was anticipating organic growth of 5 to 10% for the current business year. After the acquisition, sales are expected to increase by 15%. Knapp is also celebrating a major project win. The group has landed the order to install the world's largest OSR Shuttle system for Hermes Fulfilment – part of the leading retail and services group, Otto.
