Frankfurt enjoys ‘record traffic’
FRANKFURT-MAIN airport had an extremely successful June, with record freight and passenger throughput figures for themonth. Germany’s busiest gateway
handled 192,058 tonnes of air freight in the month, up by 29.9 percent on June last year. Also pointing out Frank-
furt’s record passenger traffic in the month and its highest- ever June figure for aircraft maximum take-off weights, Fraport executive board chair- man Stefan Schulte said: “These numbers convincingly show that the finance and eco- nomic crisis has been overcome and that the aviation industry – despite several small traffic
blips – is back on track to reaching and even exceeding the results of the pre-crisis year.” Across the Fraport Group’s
five majority-owned airports – which include Antalya in Turkey, Burgas and Varna in Bulgaria, and Lima in Peru – cargo throughput was up by 27.5 percent year-on-year to 217,000 tonnes. The June statistics finished
off a welcome recovery in vol- umes that characterised the first half of 2010, duringwhich Frankfurt-Main handled over a million tonnes of air freight, more than 32 percent up on the first half of 2009. The group as a whole has
benefited tremendously from the growth seen at Frankfurt- Main, with freight passing through the five gateways ris- ing by approximately 30 percent year-on-year. Fraport noted that the
results were achieved despite an eventful first half to the year, which included winter storms, strikes and a volcanic ash cloud that forced the clo- sure of much of Europe’s skies for nearly a week in April.
