NEWS Cathay tells of ‘robust’ demand


AIR FRANCE-KLM CARGO flew 944 million revenue tonne-km in June, 0.8 percent more than in the same month of 2009. With capacity down year-on-year by 2.8 percent, the load factor rose by 2.4 percentage points to 67.7 percent.


EGYPTAIR IS TOSTEP up its flights between Cairo and Lon- don Heathrow, operating double-daily services three times a week and daily at other times. The carrier will continue to offer a weekly flight between Luxor and London Heathrow.


AMERICAN AIRLINES SAYS IT flew 159 million cargo ton-miles in June, up by 19.3 percent on the same month last year.


KENYA AIRWAYS is to acquire two Embraer E190 air- craft, the first of which is expected before the end of 2010, citing the need for more passenger and cargo capacity.


HONG KONG-based com- bined carriers Cathay Pacific and Dragonair have released air freight figures for June that show significant growth in the amount of cargo and mail flown by the two airlines. Together, they carried a


total of 148,520 tonnes of cargo and mail during the month, up by 19.9 percent on June last year. The cargo andmail load fac-


tor was 75.4 percent, a rise of 4.1 percentage points, while capacity, measured in available freight tonne-km, was up by 19.2 percent. In the first half of 2010, the tonnage carried rose by 24.4


percent year-on-year, com- pared to a capacity increase of 7.1 percent. Cathay Pacific generalman-


ager cargo sales andmarketing JamesWoodrowsaid: “We saw some softening in the market in June compared to previous months and the increase in tonnage was only just ahead of the increase in capacity for the month. “However, overall demand


remained robust out of the key Hong Kong and Shanghai markets, particularly


on


transpacific routes. The Japan market has also been perform- ing well.” Woodrow added that the


airline has now brought back all of its parked freighters into service, although one Boeing Converted Freighter will trans- fer to the cargo joint venture with Air China in August.


Cathay Pacific said it


expects to see strong demand throughout July and August, but it is viewing trends towards the end of the year “with a degree of caution”.
