Formerly of Somerville, MA and Wayland, MA died on July 10, 2010 at his home in Herndon, VA. He was born on December 27, 1920 in Nova Scotia to the late Rueben and Phoebe Anderson Farrell. Harold retired after 42 years of service with the MIT Draper Labs as plant manager. He was a longtime member of College Avenue United Methodist Church, Somerville, MA and The Community United Methodist Church, Cochituate, MA and he volunteered his time as a Boys Scout Leader for 25 years in Somerville, MA. Harold was the beloved husband of 68 years of Connie Farrell, loving father of Judie Robertson of Herndon, VA and Richard Farrell of Great Falls, MT, proud grandfather of Jacinda, Heather, Todd, Matthew and Beth and six great-grandchildren. Uwe retired after 28 years of service with Fairfax County, Department of Public Works and Environmental Services as a supervisor. Uwe was a Veteran of the German Air Force, stationed at Dulles through NATO and was a volunteer fireman with FFV, Bleidenstadt, Germany. Uwe was also a 4th degree black belt instructor with Bert Smith’s Tae Kwon Do, Sterling,VA. Formerly of LakeWorth, FL and New Rochelle, NY, passed away on July 9, 2010 in Boca Raton, FL. He is survived by his wife Rita; children Monica Sussman and Jeffrey Hilton, son-in-law Richard Sussman; daughter-in-law Alice Hilton, and grandchildren Joshua and Robyn Sussman. Born in Krakow, Poland February 20, 1920, he went to school in France, survived the rigors of World War II, and resided in England before moving to NewYork in 1948. He founded Rand Construction Company in 1957. In 1980 he retired to Lake Worth, Florida where he and his wife Rita lived until moving to Boca Raton several years ago. He loved opera and travel and visited most of the world. Of Stafford County, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, July 9, 2010. Tom was born in Pottstown, PA to the late Alfred and Florence Gotta. After completing high school in 1964, he joined the US Marine Corps enlisting as a Private. Tom honorably served in the Corps for 27 years and retired at the rank of Lt. Colonel. After his military retirement, Tom was employed at the NationalAcademy of Sciences for several years and spent the past 13 years at the Ronald Reagan Building as the Director of Parking Operations. A long-time resident of Washington DC, completed her life on July 10, 2010 at her residence on Connecticut Avenue, aged 93. Born Edith Corlies Houston Brown in Philadelphia in 1916, she was the daughter of Dr. Henry Paul Brown, Jr., and Edith Houston Brown. A graduate of the Agnes Irwin School and Radcliffe College, she worked in Boston, Philadelphia, and Avon, CT, before moving to Washington during World War II to work for Bishop Angus Dun of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. In 1948, she married the Reverend Carter S. Gilliss; they lived in Poolesville, MD, where he was rector of St. Peter’s Church until his death

Ellen Bond Schaffer, 65, died July 12, 2010 at her home in Mitchellville, MD after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.Ms. Schaffer was born inWashington and raised in the Bethesda enclave of Edgemoor. She attended Holy Cross Academy, Ursuline Academy and was a graduate of George- town Visitation’s junior college and of the University Maryland University College where she studied Physical Anthropology. In 1971 she married and moved with her husband to Cheverly, Md., where they later raised two daughters. An avid lover of the outdoors, she studied to become a certified professional horticulturist and embarked on a long-term landscaping project at her home in Mitchellville, where she moved with her family in the late 1980s. The grounds of the Schaffer family home now boast waterfalls, two lily pad ponds, vine- covered pergolas, a small orchard of fruit trees and all manner of perennials that welcome countless birds and other wildlife. After her children entered high school, Ms. Schaffer began working at the Behnke Nurseries Co. in Largo, Md., and enjoyed offering gardening advice to anyone with a passion for plants. She was a friend to animals, particularly pets and wild birds that visited her yard, and liked to travel the globe to see the great gardens of the world.


She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Michael J. Schaffer; two daughters, Kate Schaffer (Kristin Kimmel) and Sarah Schaffer (Todd Trego); two brothers, Samuel (Andrew) Bond and James H. Bond; a sister, Elizabeth Jane (BJ) Casali; and twin grand- sons, Milo and Jasper Kimmel Schaffer; and nieces and nephews.

Of Sandy Springs, GA, 68, died at home on July 10, 2010 surrounded by family, after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. Barry was born on December 30, 1941 in New York City where he lived until the age of 5 when his family moved to Mt. Vernon, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Murray and Cecelia Blumberg and his first wife, Linda Blumberg. He is survived by his son, Andrew Blumberg, wife Tina and granddaughter, Linda Haley; his wife, Isabel Gulden and her children, Kate Lipton, Len Ari and Randi Lipton, and son Sam; siblings Barbara and Eddie Baron, Bruce and Robin Blumberg; nephew, Ethan Krash, wife Elizabeth and children Eric and Eli; as well as in-laws, the Gulden and Horowitz families of Atlanta.


Barry was a Graduate of The George Washington


Barry had a highly successful career in construction and development for over 40 years, beginning at the Rouse Company as an Engineer, Senior Project Manager and Assistant Vice President. As his career progressed, he rose to become the President and Principal of several construction concerns including, Sigma Development and most recently, Linbar, Inc. He leaves behind an impressive body of work which includes: University Town Center at Prince George’s Metro Center (Hyattsville, MD), The Boulders Office Park, Boulder Springs Apartments, MerchantsWalk Shopping Center, Midlothian Station Shopping Cen- ter, and Robius Hall Shopping Center (all in Rich- mond, VA), Dunwoody Hall Shopping Center, Bells Ferry Landing Shopping Center, and Parkaire Land- ing Shopping Center (all in Atlanta, GA), in addition to many others stretching from Erie, PA, Voorhees, NJ, Baltimore, MD, Kingsport, TN and San Antonio, TX. in 1960. In 1968, she married the Reverend Craig E. Eder, then chaplain at St. Albans School. Their devoted marriage lasted until his death in November 2009. The Eders were enthusiastic travelers all their lives together, visiting friends in many parts of the world and spending as much as possible of every summer at their island home in Maine.


Always generous with her time and resources, she led a life of service and of quiet philanthropy. She was a member of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church for over forty years, serving on its Vestry for many of them. Other volunteer activities took her to various roles at Sibley Hospital, St. Albans School, Sidwell Friends School summer programs, and the City Hall hotline.


Mrs. Eder is survived by a brother, Dr. Thomas Brown of Lebanon, NH; a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Dallett of Taconic, CT; daughter Edith Gilliss Faile and husband David of Fairfield, CT; son William Gilliss of Louisville, KY; son John Gilliss and wife Barrett Alexander of Portland, ME; grandchildren Carter Gilliss, Meghan Gilliss, Nathan Gilliss, and Edith H.M. Faile; and many nieces and nephews.


A celebration of her life will be held at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church, 1525 Newton St., NW, Washington DC, in September. Private interment will follow in Rock Creek Cemetery.
