There are dozens of potential sea kayak tours in the 1,700 islets that make up the southern tip of Florida, making the Keys a great destination for both day-tripping and multi-day paddling. Unique ecology, diverse sea life and 36 species of threatened or endan- gered plants and trees highlight a daylong circumnavigation of Lig- numvitae Key. A more ambitious, 100-kilometre route around Cape Sable includes the best of both Everglades mangroves and the open water of the Keys. Access to the area is via Highway 1, aptly named the Overseas Highway.
OKEFENOKEE SWAMP GEORGIA
A national wildlife refuge and wilderness area protects more than three-quarters of Georgia’s 175,000-hectare Okefenokee Swamp, the largest wetland in the United States. Seven sea kayaking water trails crisscross the refuge and access the swamp’s seven interior camping platforms and two island campsites. Paddling is the most intimate way to experi- ence this vast, biologically diverse, ever-changing network of forest, marsh, lakes and islands.
