CATHY CHOI, LS Bulbrite

During her eight-year tenure as her company’s President, Choi has positioned it as an educational leader of light bulbs at a time when lamping technology is changing rapidly. She has built the company’s sales network, expanded its breadth of innovative products and established a Dallas showroom to better

serve customers. Choi is an ALA certified Lighting Specialist (LS), a member of the ALA Education Foundation and Manufacturers Steering Committee. She is also a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. Three words that best describe her: Innovative, progressive, intuitive

FRED FENNELL, CLMR

Fennell Marketing & Sales Ltd. Fennell is the owner of an independent manufacturers’ representative agency in Barrie, ON. Instrumental in organizing the ALA’s government affairs effort in Canada, Fennell is a key point person for the association’s work with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to create efficiency policies

that save energy without putting undue burdens on lighting and ceiling fan manufacturers and retailers. Fennell has served on the ALA Board of Governors since 2004 and was its Chair in 2007. He received the ALA Pillar of the Industry Award in 2003. He currently serves on the ALA Long Range Conference Planning Committee and the ALA Manufacturers Representative Steering Committee. He’s been a strong proponent of the BiNational Advertising and PR Program. Three words that best describe him: Resourceful, leader, integrity

JOHN ROT

Hortons Home Lighting In 1994, Rot bought Hortons with his college roommate and partner David Rizner, turning it into a “must shop” store in downtown La Grange, IL. Innovative merchandising, plus an Ace Hardware in the basement, give Hortons its unique flair. Yet it is his H Foundation charity that truly sets Rot apart

from the pack. The non-profit organization was founded to find a cure for cancer. Since 2001, the annual Goombay Bash has been the foundation’s major fundraising event and it is supported by several industry partners. In just nine years

the group has raised more than $3 million for the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. In that time, the Bash has gone from a local event to a national fundraiser that draws hundreds from the lighting industry each year. The 10th anniversary party is slated for Aug. 7 at Chicago’s Navy Pier. Three words that best describe him: Honest, loyal, driven

RICHARD D. UPTON, CEE

American Lighting Assn. Active in government affairs throughout his career, Upton’s most recent accomplishment is establishing the ALA as a leader in the U.S. and Canadian energy-efficiency and conservation movement. In 2007, he was among the industry representatives who helped shape the energy-efficient lighting

section of the Energy Independence and Security Act. Many credit him for the “bulb in the box” compromise in California’s Title 20, which allowed portable manufacturers to meet requirements by simply including a screw-in CFL with every lamp sold. “Dick has been visionary in seeing what the needs of our industry will be,” says Maria Scutaro in her nomination on behalf of Murray Feiss. “He has led us through uncharted waters and he has remained calm and handled everything so smoothly and with such grace that our confidence in him and ALA never wavered.” Three words that best describe him: Leader, forward thinker, steadfast
