THE ETHNIC SPECIALISTS
Understanding textures of different types of hair requires technique. These salons can do it all, regardless of hair type. And the atmosphere is unique.
HOSEA LAMONT BEAUTY SCIENCE INSTITUTE
On the quest for moisturizing products that don’t weigh hair down, Hosea LaMont developed his own line, aptly called Hosea LaMont. The hair guru keeps stylists on their toes with his education salon, products and constant classes. “Things change so frequently in the beauty industry,” he says. “You have to stay up on it.” So every Tuesday, he invites area stylists to his 15-bedroom, six-bath, 7,000-square-foot institute. Oh, and he also does fantastic hair. As does artistic director Twanda Franklin, who specializes in extensions, and Shana Watson, who is fantastic with
color. Cuts $55-75 for women, $15-30 for men; color $75 and up; extensions
$150 and up. (2742 W. Highland Blvd., 414-935-9000.)
PERFECTION BY JE’LAMAR
Jimmie (Je’Lamar) Tally is all about
texture. Trained by his uncle Hosea La- Mont, Tally, in turn, teaches stylists how to work with different types of hair. “It’s not about race; it’s not about style,” he says. “It’s about what you do with the texture of your hair.” Cuts $70-250, men’s $30; color $115 and up. (230 W.
Wells St., Suite 100, 414-765-0191.)
STELLA’S
Led by the fabulously talented and well-respected K.C. Miller, Stella’s has a fun and funky Washington Heights vibe. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in a building that was once a funeral parlor, Stella’s prides itself on diversity, affordability and keeping up with trends.
Kate Weimer excels with color, Angela
Krueger tackles straightening and ethnic styles, and Kimarie Doud specializes in men’s cuts. Cuts $28-65, men’s $23-45; color $70 and up. (5050 W.
Vliet St., 414-443-2003.)
