THE TRENDSETTERS
FREYA
Winning raves from top shops in town, this Bay View salon opened nearly three years ago with gorgeous wood fl oors, Cream City brick and playlists to please any indie music fan. Seven former Beauty stylists took the less-traveled co-op path, making each hairdresser a part-owner with a specialty. Molly Chase loves long hair, Josef Maenpaa gravitates toward funkier ’dos and bold, punky colors. Katie Harder’s specialty is curly hair and blondes, while Stephanie Stubbe is great with softer styles and round brushing. Patrons fl ock from the city and suburbs alike. Cuts $40-60; color $70 and up. (2318 S. Kin-
nickinnic Ave., 414-747-9712.)
SALON NOVA
A new owner but a legend in the business, Nova Beschta opened this intimate, four-chair Brady Street salon a year ago with Michael Grober. Aiming for affordable glamour, the interior harkens back to old Hollywood with a silver, gold and black color palette and ornate chandeliers. Hair aside (Nova likes long, Michael short), the
shop offers microderm, Botox and fi llers along with Nova’s eyelash extensions, a service he says takes years off a woman’s look: “It’s like waking up with makeup on.” Cuts $25-45; color
$50 and up. (1437 E. Brady St., 414-273-6682.)

Owners Diane Lukich and Leroy
Buth stay abreast of interna- tional trends. The newest? Highly sought beach waves created through a perm-esque process. Only fi ve stylists work in this modern white space with Italian furniture, and each is highly specialized. Artistic director Michael Potter is a precision cutting master, for instance, but doesn’t do color. “We work at a higher end,” Luckich says. “It’s a completely different realm.” Cuts $60-100, men’s $45-60; color
$75 and up. (1221 E. Brady St., 414-272-4256.)
DE RIAH BOUTIQUE SALON
Trendsetting isn’t limited to the city. Shelley Szypszak was the fi rst to bring Aveda to Cedarburg and Bumble and Bumble to the North Shore, and her 13-stylist

salon does Keratin and Brazilian blowout straightening treatments. “I’m never behind on something,” she says. Cuts $25-67; color $50 and up. (W64 N707
Washington Ave., Cedarburg, 262-376-1988.)
THE ESTABLISHMENT
Well-traveled twosome Carly Flynn and her husband, Howie Goldklang, are opening a second location in Los Angeles. But don’t fret. Their ever-popular, fi ve-stylist Shorewood salon remains, with a knack for progressive haircuts and trends. “Our stylists tend to be younger, so they have their fi nger on the pulse of what’s happening,” Flynn says. Looking for a change? Try Suzanne Kelly, who’s particularly good with color. Cuts $35-55; color $60 and up.
(4503 N. Oakland Ave., Shore- wood, 414-963-4300.)
CARTERS SALON
With a warehouse feel in a historic mill building, Carters expects its 13 stylists to be well- rounded yet innovative. “We’re not scared to make changes,” owner Carter Prinsen says. “We can create looks that are edgier

or softer. Each girl can shoot out anywhere from 10 to 15 ideas.” Sarah Parker is great with creating new styles, and Pamela Schwister is a “color machine.” Carters does a lot of color and was the second sa- lon in Wisconsin (the fi rst was in Madison) to receive titanium honors with color line Goldwell. Cuts $35-60, men’s $25-32; color $40 and up. (1350 14th

ACTAEA WORKS LTD.
Bringing spa services to Bay View in 2007, owner Jason Wedesky converted a Victorian home into a salon with stunning modern design. Full of various relaxing rooms, the salon is entirely different than the original Actaea in Shorewood, which opened more than 16 years ago in a large open space with vaulted ceilings. Both locations offer exceptional, affordable, eco- friendly services. Cuts $30-70, men’s $25-50; color $50 and
up. (2173 S. Kinnickinnic Ave.; 4001 N. Oakland Ave., Shore- wood, 414-962-9889.)
