TRINITY IMMIGRATION INITIATIVE

Research programme on diversity, integration and policy

Trinity Immigration Initiative (TII) brings together key strands of TCD’s strategies in research, teaching and engagement with society, positioning the University to play an infl uential role in developing a more inclusive, multicultural society for Ireland’s future. TII encompasses a range of research projects looking at issues of integration in different settings – schools, the community, the workplace and in society more broadly.

One of the highlights of 2009 was a landmark photographic exhibition co-ordinated by TII’s Migrant Networks Research Project – ‘Leaders’ – which was displayed in locations across Dublin during 2009. This exhibition showcased the contribution made by leaders of migrant networks in the fi elds of advocacy, religion, culture, media, and gender, highlighting how these networks facilitate migrants’ integration in Ireland and their cultural expression. In June 2010, TII will be hosting a

major international conference ‘New Migrations, New Challenges’ in Trinity College Dublin.

MEDICAL OVERSEAS VOLUNTARY ELECTIVES

Building a brighter future in third world communities

Medical Overseas Voluntary Electives (MOVE) supports third level medics on placement in developing countries. Countries visited last summer include, Tanzania, Nepal and the Pacifi c Islands. Funds raised throughout the year was distributed among MOVE members for use in their respective hospitals.

MOVE was generously supported by

the TCD Association & Trust. Money was used to buy equipment such as blood pressure cuffs, glucose monitors, supplies and medications. MOVE members spent four weeks in these hospitals learning medicine from another perspective, helping to care for patients and experiencing another culture very different from Ireland.

experience and a massive eye- opener to the challenges facing the medical profession in a third world country. Working in a hospital with such limited resources was diffi cult but it was evident that the money we brought and the time we spent with the local people would make such a difference to their lives.”

A forum for incisive debate and research

The Social & Political Review is an

academic research journal dedicated to publishing the best original undergraduate research and writing in the fi elds of social and political science. Now in its 20th year, the Social & Political Review has long served as a forum for publishing original and insightful refl ections by students on critical issues in society and politics.

In 2009, the Social & Political Review

received generous funding from the TCD Association & Trust which contributed considerably towards meeting production costs. Some of the funds were also used for promoting the

and for meeting the cost of the journal launch in March.
