my best holiday ever

Diane Inglis and her children discovered spectacular Alpine highs on a trip to Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland

One of the best holidays I ever had was in the small, car-free village of Wengen. I love the outdoors, so I was keen to take in Wengen on foot with my two teenage children. I knew we’d enjoy it—but the magnificence of the scenery blew us away. Wengen is a typical Alpine village, famed for its clear air, beautiful scenery and endless sunshine. However, despite visiting in the summer, we faced rain, snow and just a few weak rays from a watery sun. In fact, we were so ill-prepared that we had to buy umbrellas to shelter from the heavy downpours! Weather aside, the scenery is breath- taking—armed with a Swiss railcard, we

traversed the mountains on railways and cable cars. The nearest town was Lauterbrunnen,

which was bedecked with flags fluttering in the breeze, giving a celebratory feel. From there, we took a cable-car to the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant featured in the Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The Trümmelbach Falls were also worth

a visit. Apparently the largest glacial water- falls in Europe, they carry the water of ten glaciers (at 5,283 gallons per second, according to our guide). We were literally inside a mountain, and the power of the water was truly awesome as the raging torrent thundered down. We didn’t see any of the nightlife—a day

in the fresh air was enough to put paid to any ideas of partying. Each day was over by 10pm; a perfect end to each perfect day!
