The Kids Are All Right
Trifecta of youth bowlers giving the pros a run for their money.

shave, he’s never been to high school and he still bowls youth leagues, but that hasn’t stopped the 12-year-old phenom from Brentwood, Tenn., from com- peting against the pros. Doyle finished 30th in
the Professional Bowlers Association Canton (Ga.) Open Regional tournament May 9 at Cherokee Lanes, becoming the youngest bowler to cash in a PBA event. He earned $400, which will be deposited into a scholarship account. Bowling as a non-PBA
member, Doyle had a 2,797 13-game pinfall total (215.1 average) bowling against a 94-player field, which included some of the top regional and national tour professional players from the organization’s South region. The event was won by 2009-10 PBA Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., a 47-time PBA Tour title winner and member of the PBA Hall of Fame. Doyle, who already holds
the USBC record for youngest bowler to roll a certified 800 series at 11 years, 2 months, and 1 day, has big plans for his bowling future. “When I’m ready for col-
lege I’d like to go to Wichita State or Webber because they are two of the top bowling schools,” Doyle said. “After that I’d like to bowl on the PBA Tour.” Meanwhile, just less than two weeks later, USBC’s

reigning Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow, Andrew Koff of Miami, won the PBA South Region’s Jupiter Open, May 17, at age 18 (See p. 40 for more on Koff). A little more than a week after that, 18-year-old Matt Gasn, of Laurel, Md., won the PBA East Region Non-Champions Open at Faxon Lanes. Bowling as a non-PBA
member, he defeated Michael Bohner of Allenwood, Pa., 2-0
in the best-of-three champion- ship match to win a $1,500 scholarship for his SMART account. “I actually didn’t think it
would happen this early,” Gasn said of his victory. “There were a lot of very good bowlers in the field and I just wanted to have a good finish. “One of my goals in any
tournament is to make the cut and if I can do that I feel I have as good a chance as

ished his freshman year at Saginaw Valley State, where he was named to the all- tournament team at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships, but will trans- fer to Webber International this fall. He bowled in his first
regional three years ago at age 15 finishing 12th and has a previous best regional finish of fifth.
