exhibitions – you must see all the art- ists in their booths, Oliverson says. “I feel so strongly about the consistent high quality of the artists. Do at least two trips through the tents, and you will come out enriched in some way, I guarantee.” Oliverson also suggests chatting with

the artists to personalize the event even more. “If you go to a shop or a gallery, it’s very limited,” he says. “Here, you have 180 or so artists, and you have a one-on-one contact experience not readily available. You’ll get a story along with the art and that makes it special.”

Look Who’s Talking

You never really know with whom you might be chatting. Could be an artist already featured in private collections, museums or well-known galleries. Or it could be the next Warrington Colescott, a Wisconsin native and internationally respected printmaker who will have his work featured in a retrospective exhibition June 10-Sept. 26 at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Titled “Warrington Colescott: Caba-

A catalogue raisonne (a complete listing of his works) is available for purchase. Te Museum co-published it with the University of Wisconsin Press. But years ago – or as Colescott says,

He would have been conversing with attendees about his printmaking technique or the inspiration behind a piece. He’s known for using his sharp wit and vivid imagination to inter- pret contemporary and historical events. If you get the chance to see his exhibi-

tion or study his works, be sure to linger over his three-print set that interprets the popular Christian theme of Judgment Day. In Colescott’s interpretation, the dead board Air Death, counsel with their lawyers and stand in judgment before God, who watches a summary of their lives on TV monitors before hitting one of two buttons on his desk to send the judged up or down. Like we said. Just lin- ger a while. And if you run into Colescott, ask him why it’s one of his favorites. “At a gallery, sometimes people are

more reticent to talk,” Colescott says. “It’s a semi-private experience, and people
