Fire Recovery Matures into Disaster Preparedness

8

A joint effort between the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego and the Methodist Church, Recover San Diego began as a response to the 2007 wildfi res. Generous donations received from throughout the diocese and the greater Episcopal Church allowed us to help people throughout the six-fi re area. Whether it was providing a camp for kids who lost their homes, fencing homesites while they were rebuilt or purchasing replacement items for fi re survivors, Recover San Diego helped many, including those outside the FEMA system. Recover San Diego concluded its work as a fi re recovery organization in May. As a diocese, our focus now is preparing for disaster so that we can better respond as a community of faith. “We can do more together than we can apart,” said the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes.

San Diego donates $22,000

to Fired-Up Sisters in Poway to transport children who lost their homes. The donation concludes the work of Recover San Diego, however, disaster preparedness in our diocese continues.

“Recover San Diego is one example of this successful collaborative work.” Thank you for your continued generosity which allows us to be the light of Christ to those the world forgets. X

Growing Older and Better

Aging with Grace: Mrs. Mary

Maud Sadler celebrated her 90th birthday in May. Our diocese is richly blessed with many active retired clergy and spouses living out God’s call with vitality.

On May 3 Mary Maud Sadler, parishioner of All Souls’, Point Loma, celebrated her 90th birthday. Mrs. Sadler is the widow of the Rev. Canon Boone Sadler who established Camp Stevens and started the prison

ministry at Donovan Correctional Facility. An active member of Love Uniting Volunteers (LUV), she received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2002 for her work with St. Paul’s Retirement Homes Foundation. She was also president of LUV from 1997 until 2002. Mother of fi ve, Mrs. Sadler was joined by friends and family including a host of grand- children and great-grandchildren to celebrate the birthday.

“The best advice we ever got on how to be an Episcopalian in any capacity,” said Mrs. Sadler, “was what Bishop Robert Gooden said: ‘Love your people, say your prayers and God will accomplish the growth.’”

Mrs. Sadler’s birthday wasn’t the only cause for celebration in our diocese last month. May is Older Americans Month and focuses on growing strong, healthy, supportive communities for older Americans.

Mrs. Jarrett sends birthday cards, get-well cards and sympathy cards to retired clergy and their spouses. She communicates with Bishop Mathes about their needs and organizes a Eucharist once per year to help people reconnect

In our diocese, Mrs. Lillian Jarrett, widow of the Rev. Tally Jarrett, ministers to almost 300 retired clergy, clergy spouses and surviving spouses. Mrs. Jarrett works through the Church Pension Group and was appointed to her position by Bishop Mathes.

The importance of retired clergy in our diocesan life cannot be underestimated. Many serve in mission congregations, assist in parish ministries and participate in diocesan events.

“We are blessed by the clergy in our diocese who continue to participate in the life of the diocese long after they have retired,” said Bishop Mathes.

“Love your people, say your prayers and God will accomplish the growth.”

“One priest wrote that my card was the only birthday card he received,” said Mrs. Jarrett. Her work helps retired clergy feel cared for and supported in our diocese.

An outstanding retired clergy member is the Rev. Lawrence

Waddy, who established the drama ministry at St. James by-the-Sea, La Jolla. Father Waddy will turn 95 on October 5 but his energy levels peg him closer to 30. An actor from the age of 8, Father Waddy shares his love for drama enthusiastically. He has written a book of 136 plays titled Bible Drama available for $25 from www.bibledrama.com.

Father Waddy encourages everyone to provide their children with one week of outstanding drama instruction at St. James, La Jolla (see article on page 7). “Knowing I am a character in God’s great drama gives me great joy,” said Father Waddy. X
