and assistant have taken a salary reduction so that the parish budget could fund an outreach tithe—that is ten percent given outside of the parish.

As the winds of Pentecost blow upon us, we feel the Holy Spirit move among us and moving us to engage in transformational ministry. It is my sense that one of the ways we are growing stronger in our diocese is in our connectedness. At the diocesan convention, I spoke of our diocese as a constellation of communities of heart and hope. Indeed, this is what I encounter as I visit you. What I am also learning is that,

A Growing Diocese: Bishop Mathes stands in the Labyrinth, an organic community garden at St. Mary’s, Ramona. This is just one of many ways we’re serving our communities as a diocese.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

In Temecula, a new church rises from the ground. This new building for St. Thomas-of- Canterbury will be dedicated on September 20, 2009. In Fallbrook, our parish community returned to the historic building after two and one half years. In July, I will have the privilege of dedicating a new ministry center at St. Dunstan’s. In Ramona, a community garden has begun, and St. Mary’s is building a Labyrinth in the midst of it.

“Even in these diffi cult economic times we shine the light of Christ into places of darkness.”

Music ministries are growing at Trinity, Escondido; St Peter’s, Del Mar; St. Matthew’s, National City; and Christ the King, Alpine. At St. Paul’s, Yuma, the rector

more and more, you are sharing with each other ways to support one another in ministry.

As you read this issue of the Messenger, you will feel the pulse of our diocesan heart. You will sense how even in these diffi cult economic times we shine the light of Christ into places of darkness. I hope you are as impressed as I am with how our congregations and ministries radiate the gospel. This constellation of communities of heart and hope that make up the Diocese of San Diego is on the move; the Spirit is upon us. We seek Christ by serving others. And it is in the face of those whom we serve that we see the face of God.

Faithfully,

Bishop Mathes encourages all people of the diocese to attend these meetings during which he and a representative of our deputation will report on the outcomes of General Convention and the effects of the new legislation on church life. There will be time for your questions.

July 21 St. Paul’s Cathedral, San Diego, 7:00pm

July 28 Grace, San Marcos, 7:00pm

July 30 St. Margaret’s, Palm Desert, 6:00pm

Fielmente,

El Reverendísimo James R. Mathes Obispo de San Diego Page 1  |  Page 2  |  Page 3  |  Page 4  |  Page 5  |  Page 6  |  Page 7  |  Page 8
