Tanks have ‘greenest’ credentials

R

ecent studies demonstrate that tankcontainers have a carbon footprint almost 50 per cent

lower than equivalent drummed shipments on long-haul routes. Tankcontainers are the most energy-

efficient and environment-friendly way of moving intermediate quantities of bulk liquids. In an increasingly environment-conscious

world, where carbon trading is now a real economic consideration the tankcontainer makes sense, according to UBH International, which has been producing transport tanks for 50 years.

The intermodal tank container is an extremely safe, economical and environmentally friendly means of transport, offering, reduced handling, safer filling and discharging, robust design, tamper-proof construction and re-usability over a life of up to 35 years. A contrast to the inefficient, costly and sometimes hazardous shipment of liquids in drums.

ISO-tanks range in capacity from 7500 to 26000 litres and are equally well-suited to foodgrade, pharmaceutical and hazardous chemical applications. Industrial gases such as liquid nitrogen, oxygen and argon can also be

securely shipped in tank containers, with easy transfer from road to rail to ship minimising the burden on the environment, and benefiting the bottom line. ❒

Electric heating enhances pump temperature control

B

ecause of the temperature/viscosity relationship of many products, such as bitumen, plants and pumps have to

be heated. Thermal oil or water/steam systems are widely used but need complex infrastructure. Electric heating is making pump temperature control much easier especially in mobile plants, where other possibilities for heating are not available. The Rotan pump can be equipped with a heating element from 330W within the pump idler, this being ideally placed in the centre of the pump. In many applications this solution is sufficient but for higher demands, additional electric heating elements can be placed in the rear cover. A thermostatically controlled operating system is

available, preventing the pump from being started before the correct operating temperature is reached and with the benefit of preventing the pump from overheating on temperature critical applications. Two 8-in ROTAN pumps for Asphalt transfer

installed in 2004 at one of the major Asphalt terminals for road construction in Sweden. Since the start up the pumps have been running without any interruption and maintenance. ❒

Strain gauge amplifier is Atex- approved for hazardous zones

P

re-release evaluation units are now available for a high- performance Atex amplifier

for use in Hazardous Zones 0, 1 and 2. The ALA5 Atex-approved strain gauge/ load cell amplifier is intrinsically safe to EN 60079-11 and provides a two-wire, 4–20mA current loop output. Mantracourt says that this high- performance amplifier can also be used with pressure and torque transducers. It can be connected to Atex-approved equipment within the hazardous zone or to non-approved equipment outside the hazardous zone, provided that a suitable barrier is used. Designed for fitting in-line to strain gauge-based sensors, the amplifier is housed within a stainless steel, IP67, NEMA 4, EMC-protected enclosure and is supplied with 1m strain gauge cable and 5m output cable. An OEM option is available for customers wishing to embed the Atex amplifier within the sensor. Features include:

❒ High performance amplifier certified for ATEX Hazardous Zones 0, 1 & 2. ❒ Designed for fitting in-line to strain

gauge sensors such as load cells. ❒ Intrinsically Safe to EN60079-11. ❒ Provides 2-wire 4-20mA current loop output.

❒ Fast calibration via gain and offset trim.

❒ Supplied with 1m strain gauge cable and 5m output cable.

❒ Robust design, reverse polarity & short circuit protected. ❒ OEM option available.

Meanwhile, Mantracourt’s ICA range of miniature load cell signal conditioners, offer a high performance strain gauge amplifier in miniature format, designed specifically for fitting inside load cells, converting a standard load cell to a volt or mA output. The ICA family offers high stability and fast response. The amplifier is available in six versions with two performance categories S & H (industrial and very high stability). The ICAH range offer very low drift over wide operating temperatures. ATEX certification pending on some variants. ❒
