THE YEAR SO FAR....

THEMARKETASAWHOLE IS DIVIDED INTO IN-STOREAND ONLINE PHOTO PROCESSING, ALTHOUGH BOTH REFLECT SIMILARTRENDS.

This year so far, there has been a decline in standard digital prints by value (in terms of the amount of money made from sales) and, to a lesser extent, by volume (the number of prints sold). Analogue printing is falling steadily, up to 40% less analogue prints were made than during the same period last year. However, we must not forget that this is still a huge market, worth several hundred million pounds to consumers and those who provide the service.

The photo gifts market itself is

divided into several sections, and can be measured in terms of volume and in terms of the number of prints in total, as some gifts combine more than one printed image.

In the current market, single

image gifts are experiencing considerable growth. Talking market averages, we see canvas prints increasing in sales substantially since the beginning of the year, between 20 and 30% increase. Mugs, mousemats and t-shirts were also experiencing popularity and making decent margins for their retailers. Photo book, calendar and

greetings cards sales are experiencing growth in proportion to their increased take up within stores: so far it’s somewhere between three and five hundred percent, but as more retailers invest in the capability, more consumers see the products and their popularity will continue to increase

as they saturate the market. The photo gifting arena provides a

huge opportunity for high street retailers, particularly in the photo book and calendar areas. Trends online reflect the future of

the high street, and currently represent the largest part of the photofinishing market. There is no analogue printing

market online to speak of. Digital prints are increasing, in terms of volume, by 15 to 20% per year although the value and price per item, is dropping, keeping sales figures on an even keel. According to trends reported by

online photo gift retailer Cewe, the beginning of 2009 has seen a very significant growth in large format prints such as deco and wall art, canvas prints, collages and large posters. They estimate the growth at 50% on the same period in 2008. However, it is worth noting that, as more retailers offer the same product online, individual sellers may not see the same rates of growth, but the market itself is

increasing overall, with healthy competition. Cewe also told Pixel Imaging

Guide that mugs appeared to be a big online photo gift opportunity, as were other gifts in which technological advances have been made. Because of the increased variety in colours, materials and quality, gifts like mugs, t-shirts and keyrings are becoming a more viable and popular option. The massive area of growth, as

predicted by Pixel is photo books. Cewe reported a 380% growth in this product within the last year

“The photo gifting arena provides a huge opportunity for high street retailers, particularly in the photobook and calendar areas.”
