Randstad leads the way
Philips has installed a 100% LED office lighting solution at Randstad’s new offices in Cramlington, Northumberland. This installation is one of the first of its kind in the UK demonstrating how LED solutions are now a viable general lighting option for commercial applications. By adopting this forward thinking approach Randstad can now enjoy the benefits of excellent light quality, dimmability and low cost of ownership as well as impacting on the need to reduce CO2 emissions. Family run firm, Randstad, is a leading supplier of automotive parts, consumables and disposables to the automotive, health and beauty sectors. Its brand new facilities have been built on the former site of the original premises which unfortunately had been destroyed by fire in 2008. Some twelve months on, the concept for the new building has now been realised.
As Managing Director, Martin Dowd, explains: “Whilst the fire was devastating for us at the time, on a positive note, this gave us the opportunity to really consider the design detail and investment for our new building. It really was a blank canvas. For us, it made sense to invest in LED lighting for a number of reasons not least of which is that LEDs are a clear way of contributing to reducing CO2 emissions. This, therefore, complements our personal and corporate commitment to the environment. As a commercial enterprise LED lighting will also help reduce future overheads both in terms of electricity consumption and maintenance costs but without compromise to the light quality.” Indeed, dramatic improvements in LED performance in recent years, has made it feasible to design LED systems with comparable lumen
output thereby competing with other established lighting technologies. At Randstad, the functional office lighting has been realised by using a combination of Philips Luxspace and EssentiaLED luminaires within the general office, corridors, toilets and canteen facilities. The LUXEON Rebel LEDs in each of these solutions deliver superior efficacy and reliability. As with all LED based fittings supplied by Philips Lighting in the UK, both Luxspace and EssentiaLED have a three year warranty underpinning the company’s commitment to quality, performance and reliability. In terms of energy reduction the savings speak for themselves. The Luxspace downlight consumes only 19W with a system efficacy reaching 60lm/W and delivers a light output equivalent to 2 x 18 W compact fluorescent lamps. It offers an energy saving of 50%. The EssentiaLED GU10 downlights were used primarily in areas where traditionally halogen fittings might have been installed. Here, the LED luminaires incorporate a 7W dimmable MASTER LED lamp replacing 20W and 30W halogen dichroics thus providing up to 80% energy saving. In total the overall energy usage in comparison with conventional solutions has been halved and equates to saving almost 6000kg of CO2 per annum. This reduction in energy consumption is significant given that 40% of the electricity typically used in offices is for lighting. Moreover, Randstad will maximise the economic and environmental benefits of LEDs since it has also installed easy to use control systems. The Occuplus and Occuswitch systems are an integral part of the scheme offering daylight linking and presence detection respectively. Certainly, Ranstad has broken new ground in the early adoption of this revolutionary technology but as improvements in performance continue apace we will no doubt witness the acceleration of LED solutions as the preferred choice in general lighting applications. As Martin Dowd sums up: “We are very pleased with the LED solution and our decision to move to this technology demonstrates our commitment to Philips as a brand, building on the excellent relationship we have with the Philips Automotive Lighting Division.”

Abercrombie & Fitch, the successful American fashion retailer, opened its doors in Tokyo on 15 December 2009 in the prestigious Ginza shopping district. It is the brand’s first flagship store in Asia. Similar in design to its New York flagship store, the Ginza flagship is 820sq m and has the largest hand painted mural in the world. The Ginza Abercrombie & Fitch is colossal at 56 metres and is

The new library at Queen's University Belfast is a landmark building of scale and prestige that incorporates a raft of products from MK Electric and Ackermann to complement the overall quality of the £50 million building. Designed by Boston-based architects Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott in association with Belfast architects RPP, the new library draws parallels with the proposed Coleraine Museum & Library through both its proximity to a historical context and its function. The library is close to the University’s historic Lanyon Building,
one of the signature features of Belfast's built environment, and so complements it, while also providing accommodation for 2000 readers and space for 1.5 million volumes. The requirements of an innovative, modern library are many and
the new building contains a variety of specifically controlled internal environments where heating, ventilation and day-lighting are critical factors. Common reader spaces, quiet zones, historic / special collections, artefact display and digital media are all features of an internal environment that is tailored to meet the challenges of the latest educational thinking. Literally underlying the building’s interior are underfloor distribution system products from MK Electric’s Ackermann range. The project, involving screed substrate in a raised floor application, deployed the company’s Onix Plus Outlet Lids and Ackermann Slab Boxes. Onix Plus provides innovative solutions to hard floor power and data distribution requirements in screed floors with coverings such as laminate, wood, stone and marble. A stylish and robust design offers superior load bearing performance and greater durability; and the lids – with snorkel or plain – provide wet wash solutions. A selection of lid recess depths are available, allowing for various floor depths. This product was particularly suitable on the ground floor to service reading desks, especially since it was simple to install over a very large area. Ackermann Slab Boxes provide the same services (power and data) as a floorbox and deliver a flexible and cost effective raised floor solution. A wide range of power and data accessories are available to meet all requirements and they come with a five year guarantee. Albany Plus wiring devices were also used throughout. Available in both matt chrome and satin brass finishes, Albany Plus are made
from the finest materials and coated with a special heat-cured powder lacquer finish ensures that they keep their looks for years to come. Albany Plus devices are also particularly safe thanks to MK’s unique 3-pin operated safety shutter that prevents misuse and unsafe access to live circuitry. This feature is also found in Logic plus wiring accessories, which are also installed in the Library. In vulnerable areas, the Masterseal range of wiring devices was installed. This is made with Polycarbonate, one of the toughest thermoplastics available today – so tough and durable that it’s used in motorcycle helmets and car bumpers. It will not discolour, crack or fade in UV light (unlike many other plastics), it has better resistance to chemicals than many other plastics and will maintain its high resistance to impact in extremes of heat and cold. The M&E contractor on the project was Blackbourne Electrical, whose Managing Director Morris Cairns says the quality and aesthetic features of the ranges were a major factor in their favour. “It was a case of quality over cost because this is a very prestigious job in which appearance is paramount,” he says.
14 BUILDING SERVICES & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER MAY 2010
the tallest structure in the entire Ginza shopping district. The 11- story building is packed with the hottest store models in the world. The atmosphere is unlike any other, immersed with vibrant youth, an elite All-American lifestyle, and unmatched beauty inspired by the natural terrain of the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. Add to the mix heart pumping music playing through 114 speakers and 83 subwoofers for a store experience unlike anything else in the world. The store’s unique façade design, featuring louvre frames filling
both sides of the building and leaving no space for windows, raised the need for not only a remote control system but a system monitoring solution. Reliable Martin Cyclo 02 colour temperature changers equipped with dual control ballasts and two T5 28W 2700K fluorescent tubes were chosen to illuminate the louvres. A custom made touch screen based control and monitoring
system was developed. From the touch screen system it is possible to execute regular lighting scenes, run maintenance orientated programs, and visualise alerts on possible lamp or ballast failures. This way, once an error is spotted, service staff can go directly to the fixture in question and proceed with the necessary replacement, after accessing a cleverly designed louver pull-out mechanism. In total, 130 indoor Cyclo 02 and 44 outdoor Cyclo 02 IP65 luminaries are mounted at the bottom of each louver on the building’s façade, as well as another eight Cyclo 02s placed at the 1st floor shop window area. The whole package was provided by Martin Professional Japan Ltd.
