For groups with only a day to spare, there are a number of attractions that really shouldn’t be missed…

National Railway Museum

The National Railway Museum houses the finest collection of trains and rolling stock to be seen anywhere in the world. Daily demonstrations and interactive exhibits make for a hands-on experience. Clifford’s Tower

Clifford’s Tower is one of the city’s most familiar landmarks. Follow in the footsteps of William the Conqueror and climb the 104 steps to the top for panoramic views over the city. Guided tours can be pre-booked.

National Railway Museum York Minster

York Minster

Average visit time: 1hr - 1hr 30 mins

The largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, York Minster took 250 years to build and houses perhaps the greatest collection of medieval stained glass in the world. Climb the 275 steps for a breathtaking view from the Tower top or discover the Minster’s fascinating history in the Undercroft, Treasury and Crypt. Group guided tours can be booked in advance and last around an hour.

JORVIK Viking Centre

Following a £1 million redevelopment, this award winning attraction offers visitors a ground breaking experience of Viking- Age York. New audio and video displays help you to investigate the information gathered from the 5 year-long dig at Coppergate. Plus state of the art animatronics help escort you on your way around the modified Viking-age city.

Shambles

York’s most famous medieval street, a walk down the cobbled Shambles is a must. Historically the street of butchers, it is now a plethora of little gift shops and places to eat.

York Castle Museum

Walk down the world famous recreated street, Kirkgate and experience the sights and sounds of Victorian Britain. The ‘York Gaol’ exhibition looks at characters like the infamous Dick Turpin who were kept there when the museum was a prison. Guided tours can be arranged for groups.
