Eden Camp

Experience the sights, sounds and smells of life on the home front and front line at this former 1940s POW camp. Step into a U Boat or walk through a blitzed street. The diversity of Eden Camp means it holds a fascination for all ages.

This medieval townhouse is great for hands on learning. Meet characters of the 15th century whilst learning about period clothing, historic entertainment, building methods from the past and ancient armour.

DIG – An Archaeological Adventure

DIG gives visitors of all ages the chance to become archaeologists. Children can dig for ancient artefacts in a realistic, simulated ‘excavation’, unearthing lost treasures from York’s past.

One of the best preserved medieval guild halls in the world, Merchant Adventurers’ Hall was built in 1357 and has played a role in every major historical period from then until now. Make an educational visit to the Hall or just stop to eat your packed lunches.

Quilt Museum

Home to a unique collection of historic and contemporary textiles, The Quilt Museum’s specifically designed workshop programme aims to inspire children using a cross curricular interactive approach.

World of James Herriot

Average visit time: 1 – 2 hr Travel time from York: 1hr

Explore author James Herriot’s original house as it was in the 1940s. Pupils can learn about being a vet in the interactive animal science gallery. Hands on, curriculum linked session are suitable for primary and secondary school visits.

Yorkshire Air Museum

DIG - An Archaeological Adventure

Originally a WWII bomber command station, this museum houses over 43 aircrafts including the famous Halifax bomber and more modern day jets such as the Tornado and Harrier. 40 minute workshops target key stages 2 – 3.

Yorkshire Museum

Due to reopen in August 2010 after a £2 million refurbishment, the Yorkshire Museum, a centre for science and archaeology, will contain 5 new galleries including Roman York, Medieval York, History of York, Extinct Species and the Learning Level – available as a space for children’s workshops. Don’t miss the spectacular film show in the 300 seat auditorium.

Yorkshire Museum of Farming

Home to a reconstructed Roman Fort and Viking Village, this is an ideal day out for school groups. Younger visitors will enjoy the farm animals, children’s play park and picnic area.

York Cold War Bunker

Led by a knowledgeable guide, students can explore the main features of the bunker and discover how 30 people would have lived there in the event of a nuclear strike. Suitable for key stage 3 – 4, AS/A level history.
