the makings of a champion
» Sister ship to the 18-footer Freya Hoffmeister raced around Australia, the Epic 16x ($2,995 US in fibreglass) is a compact tourer designed by former Olympic K1 champion Greg Barton. A unique footboard enables “knee-up,” surf ski- style paddling or traditional thighs-under-the- cockpit support, and clever cutaways on the foredeck improve paddle stroke efficiency. The base fibreglass-hybrid model tips the scales at a feathery 40 pounds.
» The 20-foot, six-inch Think Evo ($2,700 Cdn, $2,395 US in fibreglass) is a sleek surf ski and easy transition boat for sea kayakers. Think’s North Vancouver–based designers struck a fine balance between stability and performance, making it comfortable enough for most first time ‘ski paddlers. With long glide and effort- less cruising, paddling the Evo is addictive.
» From its aggressive-looking two-tone gel- coat to its arrow-straight keel line, the Point 65 XP 18 ($2,899 US in fibreglass) screams speed. Yet with three hatches, full decklines, a skeg and optional rudder, the XP 18 is also a ca- pable gear-hauler for multi-day trips. Stability is decent, but don’t expect the bombproof feel of a North American-style sea kayak.
The single biggest factor determining hull speed is waterline length. Fast kayaks have long, straight keel lines with minimal upsweep (known as rocker) at the bow and stern. Narrow widths and round cross- sections reduce a boat’s drag in the water. Swede form designs that are wider at the stern and narrower immediately ahead of the cockpit enable a more efficient forward stroke.
