South Georgia Defies Solo Circumnavigation Canadian sea kayaker Hayley Shephard failed in her bid to complete the first solo circumnav- igation of Antarctica’s South Georgia Island. A serious injury to her support vessel’s captain nearly scrubbed the mission at the beginning. Her kayak was badly crushed in transit, and se- vere weather left her stormbound much of the time and far short of her goal. Nevertheless she remained positive, relished the adventure and met the challenges.


  




MEC Rolls Out Paddlefest Across Canada Te venerable West Coast Sea Kayak Sym- posium appears to have sailed into the sunset for good, but north of the border the kayak fest circuit is booming. Kayak Builder Unearths Artifact Peter Orton of Valley Sea Kayaks reports that he may have found a fabled “missing link” in the world of British sea kayaking. “Last sum- mer whilst doing some maintenance around the back of our old workshop I noticed the end of a mould half buried in brambles, half un- der a build-up of dirt.” After careful examina- tion, he exhumed the mould and now believes that he has found a very early version of the Anas Acuta design (possibly the mould taken from the original plywood version), which is pretty much where the history of glass fibre sea kayaks begins. No word on whether Indiana Jones–style booby traps were sprung when the ark was lifted from its grave.
