Cutting time on tomato paste transfer D

uring the recent PPMA exhibition, Kecol was approached by a large food manufacturing organisation that was experiencing problems with the transfer of triple concentrate tomato paste (36/38 Brix). Following the exhibition, Kecol visited the

client’s site to evaluate the application. The client’s existing system was taking too long to transfer the tomato paste, in excess of 15 minutes per 240kg drum. Due to Kecol’s vast experience of transferring viscous materials, particularly tomato paste, we were convinced we could help.

Following on site discussions with the client Kecol supplied a system on a loan basis to enable the client to evaluate the proposed system and to prove its capability. The system was a stainless steel construction Maxiprime unit with a stainless steel pump and polished air motor. After two weeks the customer reported

complete satisfaction with the equipment, having achieved a time of 2.5 minutes to transfer a 240kg drum of paste.

The client also reported a reduction in product waste, which was due to the Kecol follower plate system. As well as giving a positive prime to the pump and preventing contamination of the tomato paste, the follower plate system also wipes the inside of the drum or, as in this case, the aseptic bag. Further discussions resulted in Kecol proposing a clamp construction pump unit to enable shorter cleaning times. Kecol has received an order for two systems with further orders expected in the near future for the client’s second site. n

Aqueous coalescer for electrolyte and raffinate streams

A

n innovative Aqueous Coalescer has been developed by SpinTek for both electrolyte and raffinate

streams. An extensive field testing programme was undertaken to demonstrate both low cost and effective coalescence of entrained organic to improve performance of dual-media filters; and provide a standalone solution for raffinate.

The goals as a pre-treatment to dual- media filters are:

1) Improve final effluent quality; 2) Reduce backwash frequency of the filters; and

3) Provide more easily recovered organic than reprocessing backwash electrolyte or water.

The system tests demonstrated operating at pressures less than 140kPa with obtained entrained organic removal of up to 95 per cent.

Low operating pressures lead to reduced capital and operating costs and the ability to treat raffinate streams previously not feasible due to high costs.

Further information about the basic operational considerations and design of this coalescer and how it is applied to new construction as well as operating plants can be found at www.hydroprocess.cl. The coalescer can be incorporated into existing dual-media filters to significantly improve organic removal, extend service runs, and reduce backwashing frequency. SpinTek has been manufacturing proprietary industrial filtration systems and tubular membrane filtration modules for over 14 years.

The company is also the manufacturer of robust industrial membrane systems, the rotating Speedy and ST-II Systems with ceramic or stainless steel membranes are suitable for harsh wastewater environments in industrial, nuclear or commercial applications. For university or laboratory research, the new STC tabletop has a 1:1 scale-up ratio. n

Indicating and radio link load cells available from stock

T

CM Systems is releasing the Self Indicating Link Load Cell (Sill) and Radio Telemetry Wireless Link Load Cell (Rill) as stock products. Customers who have previously specified bespoke load cells for lifting and weighing applications can choose therefore from a standard range of products resulting in faster delivery times and lower prices. The stainless steel TLL Load Monitoring Link is still available from LCM Systems as a special and can be manufactured to specific customer requirements. However, a standard version of this product will soon available from stock, as will a new wireless telemetry version. Manufactured from high-tensile aluminium, both the Sill and Rill are lightweight, while the shackle holes are steel-bushed to ensure they are rugged and hardwearing. Both product ranges can be matched to standard shackle sizes. n
