Open and online community

To support the significant evolution in its business model, Psion has also launched ‘Ingenuity Working’, an open and online community to bring its developers, partners and customers closer together in support of three new initiatives:

• to live our values, our highs and our lows in full view to become more trusted than any comparable company or competitor;

• to share and leverage Psion’s significant IP portfolio with a wide range of vendors and component suppliers;

• to accelerate a fuller and uniquely, open dialogue with its global customer & reseller community.

The new community, found at www.ingenuityworking.com, will be a place where Psion, its partners, developers and customers can meet, discuss, share, develop and co-create. It will enable Psion to cater to an explosion of micro-niches in the market, recognising that all customers really do have different needs. Mike Doyle, chief technology officer at Psion, said: “We will widen the potential applications of our industrial mobile computers, so customers can get what they want, and not be restricted to what’s already built in. Devices will be genuinely fit for purpose, and the cost of ownership of devices will also be dramatically reduced. The Ingenuity Working site helps this happen faster and wider, with ready access to all our open, standard devices interfaces, our development kits and our developers themselves. Nobody else in our industry is being this open.” As an example, for the first time a developer in, for instance, Poland will soon have the opportunity to meet resellers, and fellow developers, all over the world and find mutual customers they would never have been able to reach, or serve, together.

New launch of Workabout Pro 3

The new Workabout Pro 3 model has been developed incorporating some of the ideas that have been revealed as the company unveils a radical overhaul of its business model with a move to “Open Source Mobility” (OSM), an open innovation philosophy which means it can co-create solutions with its partners and customers. The new philosophy means that Psion will have the industry’s most modular product platform, sharing common components and tools with developers, resellers and clients. It will

allow them to create highly tailored modules for mobile devices built on Psion’s versatile product platform. The new Workabout Pro 3 includes enhancements that make it the most modular and rugged device available today that meets or exceeds the IP65 International Protection Rating:

• Improved usability - the option of four new keyboard layouts including a full QWERTY keyboard and additional keys makes it easier to navigate even with one hand.

• Visibility/long life–- a sharper, brighter display that is 25 percent more efficient than previous versions not only makes the new Workabout Pro 3 easier to read and see in a variety of lighting conditions, but also extends the battery life of the device. • Faster – the new Workabout Pro 3 is optimized for improved performance with twice the RAM and four times more Flash ROM memory to run applications even faster.

• Durability – the handheld device can withstand dust, water and extreme temperatures. The new Workabout Pro 3 is also tested to survive multiple six foot drops onto concrete.

“‘Open Source Mobility’ is a significant evolution of our business model, with objective of reducing customers’ total cost of ownership... and enhancing Psion’s ability to grow and develop its business.” John Conoley, chief executive, Psion

“The new Workabout Pro 3 extends our heritage in modular design, and underlines our new strategy for Open Source Mobility,” said Mike Doyle, Chief Technology Officer at Psion. “We know our devices are often used in some of the most demanding computing conditions, and while we continuously strive to improve our products, they are also designed to last a lifetime and withstand the elements. This is yet another world first for Psion.” The Workabout product was first launched 18 years ago, and has always had a foundation in modularity, expandability and easy customisation. The new Workabout Pro3 reflects and benefits from this philosophy and sets out Psion’s intentions with OSM. It expands upon the usability and modularity of the Workabout Pro series, offering improved flexibility, efficiency and performance for everything from RFID and scanning to biometrics. The most modular product in the industry and designed for improved

ROI, the new Workabout Pro 3 makes it easy to upgrade or change software with its flexible, “future-proof” design that allows businesses to customise the devices to meet their specific needs. This level of modularity, combined with Psion’s hardware and software development kits that allow customers to build their own applications, enables the development of thousands of buildable combinations for the devices to meet the needs of almost any business. The new Workabout Pro 3 is also backwards compatible with other devices in the Workabout Pro line, software and add-ons, allowing for seamless migration and eliminating the need to reinvest in new equipment.

Psion and BT Global Services agreement

Psion has also signed a reseller contract with BT Global Services for the networked IT services provider to resell Psion’s products as part of its BT Field Force Automation solutions to enterprise and public sector customers. BT Global Services will initially sell Psion’s rugged mobile computers to customers in the UK, Germany and France, but it is anticipated that the contract will extend to other markets in the future.

John Conoley, ceo of Psion said, “No company understands the value of communications and mobile working more than BT, so naturally we’re delighted with the start of what we expect will be a long and successful relationship. Its customers are leaders in their fields and among the biggest in the world. It opens up some extremely exciting mutual business opportunities and we very much look forward to growing the business together. Working with BT Global Services in this way is very significant for Psion.” Jonathan Brasnett, head of global mobility capability, BT Global Services, said: “Psion is one of the pioneers of mobile computing, and its products enable us to provide market leading solutions to our customers. They are an important addition to our existing product portfolio and will enable us to deliver effective solutions to our customers that will help them to mobilise their field sales and service, logistics, supply chain and transportation, and generally make their mobile employees much more productive. We are confident to include Psion products within our portfolio with their reputation for product capability, durability and reliability.” ●
