Massage Remedies
Most people are aware of the broader health benefits of massage. What is less known are the specific therapeutic benefits that certain types of massage can have on our phy- sical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Insomnia sufferers can find relief with foot massage and Shirodhara. A foot massage in the evening can help to induce deep and restful sleep. If you can’t find a professional, you can get similar benefits from massaging your own feet before bedtime, or have a friend or your partner do it for you. Shirodhara is a specialised Ayurvedic therapy that helps to balance the nervous system and is often prescribed for insomnia. Shirodhara is considered a medical treatment in Ayurveda, and it is important to have a trained pro- fessional administer this therapy and to schedule the treatment at an appropriate time; that means a time when you can rest afterwards, out of the sun.
Back problems, such as chronic tension, a prolapsed disc or sciatica, will benefit from Kati Vasti. In this treatment, a medicinal paste is applied in a ring around the afflicted area, and warm Ayurvedic oil is poured into its centre. This oil is kept there for 30 minu- tes and the treatment is often followed by a back massage.
Detox programs can be supported with a combination of Chi Nei Tsang (Taoist Abdo- minal Massage) and Lymphatic Drainage. Chi Nei Tsang is excellent for a diversity of he- alth imbalances from digestive problems to nervous tension and stress. A series of treatments is most beneficial, and it is particularly recommended before Colonic Hydro- therapy. Lymphatic Drainage is a detoxifying treatment, using gentle rhythmic strokes and soft pumping movements to encourage movement of lymphatic fluid and support the efficient elimination of waste products.
