Employee Spotlight: Arlo Tarr
WHO I AM: I am the footwear manager, and I’m one of four Board Certified Pedorthists on staff. I have been with Diamond Brand Outdoors for three years.
WHERE I PLAY: I like to run in the mountains. I run in Bent Creek and on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail regularly. I lead the Diamond Brand running group with fellow employees Kate Shirey and Sarah Merrell. We’ll be getting together again in the spring, and I’m hoping we can add some runs in Dupont State Forest.
WHY I DO IT: The outdoors is a place where you can slow the world down and regain focus.
FIRST OUTDOOR
EXPERIENCES: Growing up I spent a lot of time fishing and hunting with my dad in central Pennsylvania. When I was 12, my dad bought a house in the Sproul State Forest along Young Woman’s Creek. Our front yard was a highway for wildlife. We’d have bears, foxes, coyotes, turkeys, and deer over for breakfast in the mornings. In the summertime, my brother and I could slide down the bank out back and be in trout heaven in seconds. You couldn’t ask for a better playground.
MOST MEMORABLE OUTDOOR EXCURSION:
Chris Dannals and I went for a hike on the Appalachian Trail last spring. Chris is one of the pedorthists that works with me in footwear. It was raining pretty hard when we got to the shelter at Peck’s Corner. We gave away Smartwool socks and Superfeet to the hikers we encountered. You can make a thru-hiker really happy with a fresh, dry pair of socks. I hope Chris and I can hand out some more “trail magic” this year!
FAVORITE PIECE OF
GEAR: I will not hike without my custom Superfeet footbeds. They enhance the fit of my Lowa boots and they keep me mechanically efficient. My feet thank me at the end of the day.
