Dewatering
pumps reduce
downtime
Weir Minerals supplied a variety of
dewatering pumps to De Beers’
Venetia mine, South Africa’s
largest producer of diamonds.
De Beers carried out a feasibility
study to determine dewatering
ratios following flooding at the
large open pit in November
2006, when the operation was
subject to excessive rainfall over a
short period of time.
The study revealed that it could
take up to 15 days to dewater the
open pit sufficiently in the event
of major flooding. Downtime on
this scale would create massive
production losses.
The existing dewatering
arrangement was not capable of
removing flood water at an
adequate rate and following
assessment De Beers purchased

Quick response
assists burning rig
Weir Oil & Gas in Australia assisted in the successful plugging of a burning oil
rig that had leaked thousands of barrels of oil into the Timor Sea over a 10
week period.
Weir SPM provided an emergency rental package of high pressure
temporary flow control equipment for a second drilling rig mobilised from
Singapore, to drill a relief well to stop the continual leak. The rental package
was mobilised within 48 hours of notification from the Henderson facility in
Perth, Western Australia, and was raced to Darwin where it was transported
by boat, along with other emergency equipment to support the rig.
The leak was plugged by experts, on their fifth attempt, by injecting
thousands of barrels of mud into the well. The Weir SPM equipment was
