Just one listen to Emika’s ‘Drop The Other EP’ — out 18th
January on Ninja Tune — was enough to convince us that
one of 2010’s most compelling female talents has arrived
already. An eerie, alt. r&b grind of neo-classical pianos,
shuddering dubstep subs, skittering beats and Emika’s
breathy, seductive vocals, ‘Drop The Other’ is an instant
classic — joining the dots between dubstep’s seeping bass
heaves, Aaliyah’s darkest work with Timbaland and the
melancholic trip-hop complexities of Portishead.
At once cinematic and catchy, it’s also a tantalising taste of
what’s to come from the intriguing Emika. A former London
grime producer who found dubstep’s low-end theories when
she moved to Bristol, Emika’s relocation to Berlin has seen
an absorption of Berghain’s brooding techno intensity to
her complex palette of sonic influences.
With her full artist album due later this year, keep an ear out
for Emika’s deep, moody dubstep ballad ‘Double Edge’ and a
more techno-influenced pop sound, as well as a collabora-
tion with MyMy on Will Saul’s Simple label. ALLAN MCGRATH
