Universal has released more details about the
eagerly awaited Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Islands of Adventure
in Orlando (see page 14). In truth, we don’t know much more than we
did before, other than the names of the key attractions.
At least two of these – Dragon Challenge and Flight of the Hippogriff
– are revamps of existing park rides. Yet thanks to the presences of
Hogwarts Castle and a rich environment reminiscent of JK Rowling’s
fantasy worlds, WWHP should provide an intensely immersive new
experience for visitors to Islands of Adventure.
The Lost Continent, which WWHP replaces, was the one island at the
park not centred around a single franchise or group of licensed
properties, but soon it’s going to boast one of the most successful of
recent years.
Harry Potter’s arrival in Orlando reinforces the fact that branded
experiences are going to become increasingly important in delivering
audiences for theme parks and attractions. The stronger the brand, the
stronger the attendance – if the attraction is done right. I have every
reason do suspect Universal will do Harry justice.
