Say ‘Vermont’ and Americans think of country roads lined with stone walls, farms with red barns, covered
bridges and hamlets with old-fashioned country stores. They also think of fall foliage, when the trees
blaze with colour in the autumn. But, the Green Mountain State has much to offer year-round: from
hiking and biking in summer to skiing and boarding in famous resorts such as Stowe (see our Ski &
Board Special, page 9). There are sophisticated country inns and B&Bs, plus luxurious resorts, offering
the latest spa treatments. Instead of big cities, the cultural life of Vermont is alive and well in towns and
villages. It even has its very own coastline: along the 120-mile Lake Champlain.
