Interview Tips
Ten essential tips for attending interviews
• Find out about the company
Make sure you know about the nature of the company’s business and have some
idea of their plans for the future.
• Find out about the job
Find out what kind of person they are looking for. Clues are usually in their
advertisements and company brochure.
• Find out about the interview
There are different types of interview: technical, biographical and competency
based. If you don’t know what to expect, ring the company and ask.
• It goes without saying but we will anyway
Know where you are going – take a map and leave plenty of time for
your journey.
• Make the first impression count
If you’re unsure about how to dress, ring up and ask about dress code.
• Body language talks
Smile and make eye contact with the interviewer. Shake their hand firmly
and introduce yourself.
• Emphasise your strong points
List these beforehand and look for opportunities to bring them into the
conversation.
• Provide lots of examples to back up what you say
It has more impact if you can follow a statement with an example.
So, “I’m a team player – I demonstrated this when I worked in a team to
raise money for XYZ charity…”
• Turn a weakness into a strength
If you don’t finish work as fast as others, emphasise your diligence and
commitment to work thoroughly but squash any notion that you can’t meet deadlines.
