After a few inevitable teething troubles, China’s
latest Happy Valley is now up and running. The new park in Shanghai is
the fourth and largest to date from OCT Tourism.
The original Happy Valley, in Shenzhen, celebrated its tenth
anniversary last year and currently attracts 3.2 million annual guests.
OCT hopes to get between four and five million in Shanghai, which
would make it mainland China’s most popular park.
Those numbers are still relatively low, however, when one considers
the massive populations of some Chinese cities; around 18 million in
Shanghai and over six million each in nearby Hangzhou and Suzhou. By
rights, China should boast the busiest amusement parks in the world,
but it doesn’t.
Yet as OCT’s Wang Gang reveals on page 28, in each new city
Happy Valley arrives, the company has to grow the market from scratch
as the population gets to grips what a 21st Century theme park has to
offer. I’m sure they’ll have fun finding out.
