RADIAtION eFFeCts ReseARCH FOUNDAtION

The US National Academies is recruiting junior- and senior- level biostatisticians for the Department of Statistics at the Radiation
Effects Research Foundation (RERF). RERF is a cooperative US-Japan research institute with approximately 250 staff engaged in long-
term epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory studies of atomic-bomb survivors and their children in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan.
The findings of these studies have provided the primary basis for understanding radiation risks and for developing radiation protection
standards worldwide. Innovative statistical methodological and multidisciplinary research is needed to continue to learn how radiation
exposure leads to health effects in a large, 60-year cohort in which about 40% of the participants are still alive. Mortality records, tumor
registry cancer incidence, an extensive resource of frozen samples, and ongoing biennial clinical follow-up data offer the opportunity for
studies of a broad range of health outcomes. Collaborative studies with research scientists involving genetics, cytogenetics, molecular
biology, immunology, and biochemistry are supported. This department has a distinguished reputation in radiation risk assessment and
plays a central role in the design and analysis of major RERF studies. Department members are encouraged to conduct research in areas
such as involving risk models, Bayesian MCMC, causal pathway modeling, properties of diagnostic tests, design for cohort sampling,
dose uncertainty, and computational modeling. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and possess an earned Ph.D. in biostatistics, bioinfor-
matics, statistics, or the equivalent. Evidence of productivity in relevant research areas is required for more senior positions. Typical
appointments are for two years with the potential for renewal. Shorter appointments are possible as part of the Gilbert W. Beebe Fellow-
ship Program. The salary and benefits for the positions are competitive and commensurate with experience and may include relocation,
