COLUMBIA SUN GODDESS

SIERRA DESIGNS

BOONEY The three-inch brim extends to four inches at the back for a sassier look and extra insurance against becoming a redneck, though the possibility of redneck behaviour by anyone wearing this hat is hard to imagine. An adjustable draw cord cinches the wicking sweatband tight for a secure fit. This polyester lid is part of the Omni-Shade line with a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating of 40, which tells you what you already know: that wearing a wide-brimmed hat lets you stay outside longer. Jupiter colour shown. Also available in white, stone, limonata and blue vapour (use your imagination).

CHOCKSTONE The Chockstone’s Primaloft insulation is just right for cool nights at camp. It won’t ball up or leak like down, and is warm even if wet. With thinner insulation around the arms the jacket packs down as small as possible. Since it was never really a rain-jacket, Sierra Designs was smart to take out the waterproof membrane as of this summer, making it more breathable. The special Condor cut promises unrestricted above-the- shoulder-arm movements to allow for cross-bow draws with no ride-up

SHIRT NRS is striving for the perfect combination of quick-drying insulation and comfortable manoeuvrability with this long-sleeved base layer or stand-alone paddling top. The triple-ply Hydroskin material combines a cropped fleece liner for next-to-skin comfort, a core of 0.5-millimetre neoprene for insulation and a stretchy outer layer for durability and style. Whether on its own or under a shell, it eases worries about getting wet in whitewater or wet weather.

NRS WOMEN’S HYDROSKIN

MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP

YOHO 2 Cut generously around the shoulders to

accommodate insulating layers below, but tucked in a little around the waist for a splash of style, the Yoho 2 is an inexpensive shell for wet weather. The face fabric resists abrasion and an inner lining increases warmth and comfort, but also bulk. The detachable hood is cut for human heads, not ski helmets. For those who think wasting oil is crude, the recycled polyester of this shell uses up to 75 per cent less petrochemicals than virgin fibre.

TEVA

OMNIUM From the Latin omnis, for all, this enclosed-toe sandal tries to be all things for all places. Open sides drain water in a hurry but toe enclosures safeguard toenails while wading and scrambling. The instep and heel straps undo quickly for sliding feet into the snug neoprene sleeve. Teva has opted for Spider Rubber on the sole. It’s not their stickiest rubber on wet rocks, but one that will last through longer portages and more years kicking around the campsite.
